What Common Food Have You Never Eaten?

My dad was a food "sophisticate," by which I mean he kept weird stuff in his pantry like imported white fungus. Pickled herring always in the fridge and Limburger cheese. He swore Limburger is the most delicious cheese ever if you can get past the smell, but I couldn't.

I've never tried Limburger, but there's a Burgundy cheese called Époisse that stinks to high heaven and tastes like it too. An acquired taste, but one I've acquired.

Why did you want to acquire this?

I ask because my best friend and her husband are oenophiles, requiring me to make an effort to appreciate really good wines. I remain a peasant who thinks that a lot of wines taste like vomit.

Listening to two radio jocks the other day somehow the subject of foods they have never eaten came up. One said he has never eaten rice! Others were a mango, an avocado, shrimp, etc. I think I have tied everything just because it was drilled in my head to at least try it so you know if you like or not. Offer up a food item you have never tried.

When I was ten I was wandering across fields and forest in dairy country and found a calf carcass, still born I gather. The insides of the beast were alive with maggots. in the millions; a slithering white-orange mass of stench.

That night I was exposed to Kraft macaroni and cheese for dinner. Didn't eat then, and never have since.

liver (from any source) is the only thing I can think of. parents never made me eat it and I see no reason to start now.

not sure if it counts as common though

I have had Beef Tongue, Calf Brains, Liver from many animals, Kidney, Gizzards, Salivary Glands and Lymph Nodes in my chorizo.....but I have never had Sweetbreads (pancreas).

It is on my bucket list.

Seriously.

don't forget to try uterus.

You are just pissy because you are getting so easily beat in the brains department.

nope.I saw an episode of bizarre foods where Andrew Zimmern ate uterus at a Brazilian restaurant.
Why are you trying to start fights?

Why wouldn't I? I dare say you'd be happy to try a saprophytic or parasitic fungus, perhaps even one grown on decaying and faecal matter, as most mushrooms and vegetables are. Your attempt to invoke disgust is both hypocritical and futile.

I love Morel mushrooms. ever had them? The wood ears they use in Asian soups are nice too.

Had them? I pick them. I also gut rabbits, squirrels and partridge. Nature's a great provider.

I pick them too. takes a long time and every season is different. Wild asparagus is good about that time of the year.

I also have been eating lots of wild black raspberries lately

Yes Sir, CAPTAIN.

On the OP one of the guys said he has never had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Amazing!

There's a video on YouTube of Americans in their 20s-30s trying McDonald's for the first time in their lives. Someone grew up very rich is my only explanation for that.

Winter squashes (Acorn, etc...) are flipping fantastic.

Summer squashes (Zucchini, Crookneck, Pattypan, etc...) are excrescent and as repulsive a veg as I can imagine.

I'm the exact opposite. I like zucchini; I think acorn squash tastes like goblin feces.

I ate it once...as a kid...and its a food I will never eat again...avocados.
