Actually, I think there are quite a few Deep Purple songs that I've heard and like. I just didn't realize it was them. LOL!

One of their originals, Pefect Strangers is a good song and pretty good album, they have a very strong musical history and are a legendary band. There was a racing game that used another one you probably know "Highway Star", and of course there is "Black Knight", and "Speed King".

My favorite-Rod Evans, the original singer was on the one you normally hear on the radio. Ian Gillan replaced him-his work on the original Jesus Christ Superstar catapulted him into the position of hard rock's best singer (Steve Winwood's work with Traffic and Blind Faith was not the ear shattering stuff DP put out) until one Robert Plant showed up.

I posted this a couple years ago-It is the earliest known live recording of then 18 year old Richard Thompson who would become one of the most respected and admired guitarists in British history. The drummer in this video was killed in an accident and the original singer-Judy Dyble-was later replaced by the late great Sandy Denny (who sang with Plant on the "Battle for Evermore" the only guest singer on any LZ record). Fairport convention started as a rock-pop act somewhat like Jefferson Airplane but then morphed into the UK's preeminent folk rock band even though Steeleye Span and its brilliant Contralto Maddy Prior was more commercially successful

The first tune is the early FC Ian Matthews on lead vocals

The second is the later folk rock version-Dave Swarbrick-master fiddler on lead vocals
Richard-who later converted to Islam wrote this song about Christian martyrdom

Interesting stuff TD! :)

I sort of stumbled onto Fairport when it was playing at a used record shop circa 1975-Sandy Denny was doing a cover of Bob Dylan's PERCY'S SONG. I bought all they had and then went to Steeleye Span. A college roommate had a collection of Annie Haslam's work with Renaissance -she was the third member of Britain's greatest three-trad/folk rock lady singers (Sandy Denny, Maddy Prior and Annie Haslam)

here is Percy's Song

The lovely Annie Haslam's most famous song

and to finish the theme-this is Maddy Prior's singing-about the conflict between the factory weavers and the old school hand weavers. Love maddy going up and down her 5+ Octave range in this centuries old song

Good stuff! I am embarrassed to admit that I completely forgot about this band, really fantastic sound.
