What a Progressive Believes, (2 posts)

If you find it so interesting, why the butthurt? Just prove him wrong by making an intelligent point.. if you can. Here's a hint, don't include asinine, bumper sticker conservativism, like your stupid tag line.

Sound like you're the one who is "butthurt". Intolerance of a forum sigline pretty much proves it.

There's no need for a 16-pt definition of "progressive" in this country. Progressives are nothing more than privileged, white Democrats.

Like Bernie, rules for thee but not for me describes their hypocrisy perfectly.

Can't wait to see the Trumpites and the blithertarians post the same absurd talking points in 'response' to all of these! LOL

Gish gallop followed with a string of insults.

:donkeyfla

Maybe libertarians can start behaving in ways that don't merit insult.

This is rich in light of this:

Can't wait to see the Trumpites and the blithertarians post the same absurd talking points in 'response' to all of these! LOL

Maybe libertarians tire of being told how to think by those who believe that they are political elites.

White "Progressives" are the people responsible for the leftward lurch of the Democrat party. They are more concerned with racism than minorities are. They are more concerned about immigration than hispanics are. Unless something happens to the economy, their "Father Knows Best" attitudes will likely leave them whining about Trump for another four years.

An interesting, well composed and well written description of a moderate progressive political position. I would like to see a moderate conservative political position articulated in a similar, non-partisan way. Unlike others I do see signs of a nascent fascist trend in American politics from both the right and the left. I would compare it more to Italian style fascism from 1920-1943 rather than German or Spanish fascism, but I see a distrirbing militaristic and authoritarian trend in American public life which has been at work since the mid 1970's and is growing in scope and power.

So who has the right stuff to start a thread laying out a well reasoned, dispassionate, non-partisan and analytical manifesto for what moderate conservatism means to them?

Cheers.
Evilroddy.

They're fake, running a scam on the American people. Tossing divisive crap, hoping it sticks.
Guess what? Their crap is coming back in their general direction now, and what do they do next?
Toss double the amount of crap at the wall.

Min wage in SF is $15/hr. That's $31,200 a year gross. That's $25,401 after tax. I can find an apartment to rent for $670 to $800 a month.
Lets do a little math. $750 a month for rent divided by $2,116 income is 35.4%

Min wage in Seattle is $12/hr. That's $24,960 a year gross. That's $21,209 after taxes. I can find an apartment to rent for $700 a month.
Again the math. $700 a month for rent divided by $1,767 income per month is 39.6%

$750 for an apartment in SF? What year do you live in? Because today, there is no way you can get an apartment in SF for that much.

You have people making over 100K a year and can't even afford housing

They have nothing, so they whine about how mean liberals are to deflect from the fact they have no argument. Happens pretty much all the time

Nothing says savvy like derailing one's own thread with ad homs.

See, look at all the idiotic right wing deflection in this thread, all whiny snowflakes about how they are being attacked. No substance, just whine. That's all they do, anything to avoid actually making an argument

They just can't stand that liberals fight for others, for what is good, while they support the me me me me rigth wing culture. I want more of my money, I want government to help me and only me and people like me.

The example in the OP shows liberals fight for people other then themslelves. Blows away the myth of "wanting free stuff" when most liberals will never need any government assistance

A 1992 Toyota pick up with over 150,000 miles on it. Runs like a champ. But I bought it back in 2008. Prices still haven't changed much.

Good for you. Sadly, not everyone is as resourceful as you are, and not everyone has the means to do their own vehicle maintenance even if they were.

Suffice it to say: what are now minimum wage jobs were once more than enough for an average American family to live comfortably in their own home in a safe area on a single income. These jobs are now insufficient unless you are a relatively young, mechanically capable person with no expectations of raising a family.

I read somewhere that the average wage for a cab driver in 1970 would be the equivalent of $40 an hour in todays' dollars when spending power is taken into account. Wages have not increased with the cost of living and the younger generations are paying the price.

It's simple...he is LYING.
I live in Los Angeles and I actually know how much an efficiency or 1 BR apt costs because my daughter is frantically looking for one, and she makes MORE than minimum wage.

Won't happen, it will be the standard talking points without any substance

"I stand for small government"

I'd love to see a progressive do this as well; the OP is chain-mail garbage.

You remind of this guy.

Are you ex-military too?

Former. And I don’t think my cartoon has enough room for all the new signs I’ll need.

You guys always throw snark on those who disagree, don’t you.

You couldn't get an apartment in SF for $750/mo twenty years ago.

Now?

You can't get an apartment in LA for twice that, let alone SF.

Perhaps a conservative would take the time to address each point in some detail? Granted, despite the length of the text it's pretty generic and hard to assess what policies might be in play. But still, as a general matter I'd imagine it would be fairly easy to say why the person quoted in the OP is wrong given what is generally said about "progressives" here and elsewhere.

Yet what I've seen boils down to people finding one sentence they don't like in the OP or in the text quoted by the OP, then using that to declare themselves exempt from the discussion. Well, and all the other deliberate muddying of the waters.

And in 1970 they spoke English!

At least you admit you had nothing intelligent to add. Why even imply you found the post interesting, though, if what you meant was "I'm too angry at liberals to attempt to be fair to their points"?

BTW, it's conservatives who demand free stuff.
Sorry, no, I didn't "admit" anything of the sort; I said I chose NOT to encourage his boorishness by adding to the thread.

And in 1970 they spoke English!

Of course. They were the equivalent of $40 an hour jobs in today's dollars. Why wouldn't Americans take them? Now, that they aren't even enough to support a family, I suppose we should get used to hearing more and more foreign languages in these increasingly low paying industries, yes? God bless immigration: The lifeblood of capitalism: Enabling the greediest of us to make as much as possible while spending as little as possible.

The OP's quoted content is Gish gallop garbage, then followed by the poster's multiple insults to imaginary repliers.

No rational discussion could reasonably have been sought.

Not snark. Facts. America is full of "socialist" things that you take advantage of every day.

You just think the socialism that benefits you and not somebody else is fine, but the socialism that might benefit someone else and not you is bad. Hence your "not enough teats" comment.

Christ, even Trump thinks the USA is a complete ****hole, just look at his tweet calling the USA "a totally broken crime infested place": "they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came."

We're getting away from that kind of thinking in Canada. I think that's one of the reasons it's so much of a better place to live than the USA. What do you think?

The world's most liveable cities in 2018
Osaka, Japan.
Calgary, Canada.
Sydney, Australia.
Vancouver, Canada.
7. ( tie) Toronto, Canada.
7. ( tie) Tokyo, Japan.
Copenhagen, Denmark.
Adelaide, Australia.

Think about it, would you rather live in what Trump describes as a ****hole, or in one of the best places on earth?

I have a problem with #6 specifically. A minimum wage worker working only 1 job can afford a roof over their for less then 50% of their after tax income.

Minimum wage is what, less than 8 bucks and hour? What are we talking about, a tent?

It used to be that rent was considered to be 1/4th of one's income. So, you're saying today it's 1/2? And that leaves you with enough to live on?

Try it.
