[W:151]Iowa Caucuses

I actually hadn't been following as I should, WTF is going on with Iowa? Was Bernie winning, so the Dems had to resort to trickery? Or did Trump's pal Putin interfere?

A confusing new system for running the caucus demanded by the DNC which Iowa simply did not manage properly followed by a giant cluster of a reporting app that nobody could figure out how to use. Just a massive fail at a time when the DNC and Dems generally simply cannot afford a massive fail. Give me a Primary fist in the nation and I don't care which state has it. Rotate them if you want to.

Bad idea in the bolded. That would negate the caucus, and that would be a bridge too far. You just can't pull stuff like that.

The Iowa caucuses have needed negating for at least the last four decades I’ve been going out there to be with Yes Ma’am and her family of farmers. They supported Carter; the first time. That’s about it for the Democrats.

Kind of looks like Bloomberg was the winner tonight; completely ignoring a small EC state that has gone Red. What a waste of time, energy and $$$ for D’s.

What a cluster F. Whenever you hear a new technological approach being adopted by old dogs in traditional non-technology institutions, you can expect a cluster F. This will be up there with the ObamaCare website f up.

Winner-Trump, Biden (he was going to lose and now it won't be the big story)

Biggest Loser - Butigieg

Well I've been saying from the start that this is the Dem's election to lose, and in that they are more than capable.

Biden campaign now sent a letter to the Iowa DP wanting answers on the quality control being used, talks about some of the problems:

Because the letter is a .pdf document, I can't copy & paste it here. But did you see where Biden's campaign is telling the Iowa Party that they want to privately review and accept the results, before the Party can release the results? That means Biden's internal numbers are showing a bad turnout for him.

There's the picture from the tweet, forgot could just upload it here :doh .

Actually if you watched the floor activity from the caucus locations, it was a cluster from jump street. The reporting mess is just the last straw. No caucus should be first in the nation.
I didn't see that, and I saw maybe a half-dozen locations between MSNBC & CNN. The ones I saw seemed to go pretty smoothly & efficiently. I was actually pleasantly surprised at that.

GOP caucus went off without a hitch. Trump won.

I like the bolded!

It's going to be days, I believe. The phone line was totally overloaded. Do you think those volunteers are going to stay on the phone on hold throughout the night? I'm not at all optimistic about this. The tabulators are going to have to be extremely accurate to not further lose credibility. I'm doubtful if we'll get anything for at least a few days, but that's just my WAG.
And now, no matter what the results are everyone from second place down are not going to see the results as credible.

Great analysis. Great post!

Iowa: Low population which is 90% White; 3% African American; tRump carried it by 10 points in 2016. Two GOP senators and a Rep named Steve King, probably the most racist House rep in Congress outside of Idaho.

A victory in that state does not mean much in the big tent Democratic Party. It's like a Republican winning Rhode Island.

I live in Idaho and frankly see no racism here at all. But it is not shock. At all of the stores, I so seldom see a black one can forget they even exist.

The state party hosted a conference call with the campaigns sometime after 11 p.m. ET, but sources confirmed that party leaders hung up as campaign officials pressed for more information about the various reporting issues and when they would receive more data and results. The call became very heated, sources said.

"The app is the issue, and the hotline is smoked," said Joe Galasso, a volunteer in charge of new registrations for Waukee Precinct 2, in Dallas County. He had just gotten off the phone with precinct chairman Matt Chapman. They have not been able to report their results, even though they wrapped up more than an hour ago.

Shawn Sebastian, the caucus secretary in Ames, told MSNBC that he’d been on hold on the hotline for about two hours.“They said that they’ll be with me in the order in which you know, I got on hold,” he said, “and there was moment where they did connect for like one second about half an hour ago and then I just wasn’t responsive quick enough and they just hung up on me so I’m back in line.”
Results for Iowa caucuses delayed as state Democratic Party finds '''inconsistencies'''

NYT reporting the IDP is trying to verify app results by getting cellphone pictures of the paper worksheets

Oh, by the way, according to the IDP the app didn't fail or have any issues, it's just taking time to verify results.

Like Fiddy said, a cluster f.

But Buttigieg is looking pretty good on the podium. He does look Presidential. I still think he would give Trump fits on the debate stage.

Well - he just called out to crowd to recognize his spouse as, "the future first-man of the United States". The crowd went wild. That's a bold move, and he seems to be pulling it off.

It's a shame he's the guy most getting hurt by the reporting mess.

Now isn't that interesting? There may be hope after all. If the Dems want to get traction out of this, they've got to get the results out tomorrow for sure - preferably earlier in the day,

Damn, Buttigieg is a helluva' public speaker!

Tom Perez should hand in his resignation tomorrow morning.

It's beyond laughable that the party has had years to organize for this moment and this utter **** show is the result. Maybe they should have spent more time planning to organize the votes instead of looking for ways to rig the rules in order to let Bloomberg on the debate stage.

Yeah, but it's actually not a bad speech if you're O.K. with traditional Midwestern non-hyperbolic deadpan.

Don't be dissin' my Amy now. :naughty:

this is unacceptable. tired of these "computer glitches" that always favor the establishment.

Yeah, I though the bolded too.

Delivered with calm Midwestern understatement & sensibility. Damn, was it refreshing!

Now that's what I'm talking about, lol! Amy rules!

Klobuchar Campaign manager:
Big night in Iowa. With the numbers we’ve seen internally and publicly, we’re running even or ahead of Vice President Biden.

Big grain of salt (obviously), but if true that sounds either like a really good night for Klobuchar or a really bad night for Biden (I lean latter).

EDIT: Yang "It might be helpful to have a President and government that understand technology so this sort of thing doesn’t happen."

oof

Eh, the entire caucus thing irks me. People who have to work during those few caucus hours, left out. Those who don't have transportation to one of the caucus sites, left out. Those who are disabled, left out. Those who have small children and no one to babysit, left out.

The list of "left out" goes on and on and on. WTH is wrong with getting a ballot in the mail after duly registering to vote, and either mailing the damned thing in or bringing it to the local polling place??
