What some used to avoid saying out loud is now basically a campaign slogan, and I can't imagine at any other point in time the GOP inviting an autocratic leader of another nation who has taken action to restrict the voices of the opposition as a guest speaker at CPAC. Now in fairness, I'm sure there are plenty of Republicans who think this is all horrifying, but they need to step up to the plate where it counts. Clearly most of the politicians representing the GOP have decided to either quit or just toe the cult of personality line, but they're going to have to do better if they want to change the direction of their party. It used to be that we could vote based upon what policies each party supports. These days, it's much simpler. There is only one party in America that actually supports Democracy. That's the Democrats. The Republicans have morphed into an autocracy party, that only believes elections are fair and legitimate when they win -- and will take actions to keep Democrats, who win elections, from taking office.
Supporting the GOP in its current form is to accept the idea that any of its representatives can attempt to circumvent the election process by casting doubts on the integrity of the election only when they lose. The italicized part is a very important point because it's what makes the obvious con obvious. One doesn't even have to think about the former president, because we already have copycats in some recent primaries. It's a tactic that works when the other side doesn't do that, but it's playing with fire because if we end up at a point where both political parties see it as an effective way to scuttle elections, then we're in serious trouble.
