Turkish troops cross into north Iraq
Warplanes, elite soldiers chase down Kurdish rebels

By SUZAN FRASER
Associated Press Writer
updated 1:55 p.m. ET June 16, 2010

ANKARA, Turkey - Turkey sent hundreds of elite troops into northern Iraq on Wednesday to chase Kurdish guerrillas in an operation that could increase tensions with the semiautonomous Kurdish region.

The soldiers killed four rebels escaping after a failed attack on a Turkish unit near the border, the Turkish military said. It did not report any of its own casualties. The soldiers, supported by Turkish warplanes, were remaining in northern Iraq, the military said. It did not say when the troops would withdraw.

The military has repeatedly staged air and ground assaults against Kurdish rebel bases in northern Iraq. The last major incursion was in February 2008, when thousands of ground forces staged a weeklong offensive into Iraq.

Iraqi Kurds have been cooperating with Turkey in its fight against the rebels, sharing intelligence on the guerrillas movements and positions. However, the incursion could trigger protests from Baghdad and the semiautonomous Iraqi Kurdish region, especially if it is a prolonged one.

The military said on its website that three commando companies and one special forces battalion penetrated 2 miles (3 kilometers) into Iraq.

I wonder if Obama will call you an immediate and transparent investigation how/ why this happened.

Well yeah, the Turkish government have been doing this for years... It is one of the things which is preventing Turkey from being allowed to join the European Union. ie Turkey does not fulfill acceptable human rights standards.

No he won't, because id say it is clear that this is yet more of the same case of ethnic harassment and discrimination that has been going on for so long. How much more evidence of it is actually needed...

There is no hypocrisy at all. Turkey is attacking the PKK that attacked them whereas Israel attacked a flotilla of ships for carrying humanitarian aid. The fact some people resisted Israeli forces more than others does not somehow mean they are the equivalent of a militant group that makes it a habit of killing Turkish soldiers then running into northern Iraq.

While Turkey was sharply critical of Israel for Israel's attacking the Hamas terrorist organization in self-defense, Turkey is comfortable with allowing itself a free hand to take on the terrorists who attack it, even crossing the boundaries of sovereign states to do so while complaining if Israel acts in international waters. The existence of such a double standard is crystal clear and it only undermines Turkey's credibility when Turkey fails to practice what it demands of others.

The reality is every state has an inherent right of self-defense. Turkey might pretend otherwise when it comes to Israel, but that doesn't change the reality of the existence of that inherent right.

You see, the difference is, if we were talking about Israel being in Turkey's position there would already be about a hundred dead Kurdish civilians.

So why does the world constantly hone in on transgressions ( if they are) where Israel is involved. Why not be a bit more consistent.

Of course some resisted. Those soldiers have done some disgusting atrocities over the years.

It doesn't just hone in on transgressions where Israel is involved. I think you might be overly selective with what you read, watch...

Kurds are not launching rockets into Turkish civilian populations while hiding behind civilian populations.

Those flotilla activists have attacked the soldiers and the soldiers have eventually resisted.
But that is off-topic, I'm speaking, as don pointed out, about Turkey's criticism of Israel's self-defense practicing against Hamas.

These same soldiers have committed no atrocities. That's demonetization.

Why you are absolutely correct Andal, thanks for the correction.

These same soldiers have committed no atrocities, that's a blood libel.

Exactly. I dont believe in conspiracy theories regarding Israel or the US supporting the PKK. I know firstly its not in the interests of the US to fund socialist entities in the region. Secondly, Turkey and Washington have a lasting friendship and joint strategic interest. Thirdly, in regards to Israel's current position, i highly doubt they would play the game of the Arabs by funding terrorism. Anyway, if they think for a second Kurdistan would be a secular ally in the region, thing again. A socialist Kurdistan would probably join the socialist Arab economies in usurping capitalist free market Israel.

I disagree a bit here. Kurdistan would be isolated in the region. Hostile Turkey to the north, very hostile Arab nations to the east and west and south and a load of territory issues within "Kurdistan" because of Saddam's import of Arabs from the south. I would not be surprised if a free Kurdistan did openly ethnic cleansing on top of the covert cleansing they already are doing with the support of the US. Hence if the US left and gave up on Kurdistan the area would be overrun in a heart beat.

Turkey continuously condemns Israel when it commits raids in Gaza against Hamas.
That's where the hypocrisy lies at.

Huge difference. Israel is raiding another nation (well technically) without the approval of said nation or the international community, and it targets civilians in civilian areas.

Turkey is raiding with the agreement of the Kurdish "government" in the region and with agreement of the international community, in very mountainous areas with very little population.

And when I'm saying "bloody hypocrisy" I'm obviously referring to the Turkish hypocrite government led by Erdogan and not its citizens.
