President Trump made a puzzling claim about Andrew Jackson and the Civil War in an interview.
Speaking to the Washington Examiner, Trump wondered why issues that triggered the war “could not have been worked out” in order to prevent the bloody conflict. Trump praised the accomplishments of Jackson, the populist president he has cited as a role model. He made the puzzling claim that Jackson “was really angry that he saw what was happening in regard to the Civil War.” But Jackson died in 1845, and the Civil War didn't begin until 16 years later, in 1861. Trump then said, “People don't ask the question, but why was there the Civil War?” The war was decades in the making, stemming from disputes between the North and South about slavery and states' rights.

What a clueless idiot.

Wonder what he thinks of the Russian Revolution and what happened to the Romanovs?

Our president has demonstrated almost no understanding of history. First Frederick Douglas and now this.

Trump hasn't had history class in a long time, or thought much about history since. This is yet another example in a long line of dubious and flummoxing statements on history. He's also made statements that indicated he thought WW2 was fought hand to hand.

You know, after seeing now the 5th I think thread on this today, I have to wonder if maybe people have lost sight of what is important. Trump flubs history. This affects me how? We have another attempt at health care reform coming, we have a tax plan just released last week, we have North Korea, we have Syria, we have Russia. In the grand scheme of things, this matters not at all.

Unfortunately, even a modicum competency in history and civics is not required to run for president.

Now you would think a billionaire could have hired some tutors to bring him somewhat up to speed during the long campaign.

Then again, Trump though being president would be easy-peasy.

A man with such a poor grasp on what went before cannot be assumed to understand what is happening today.

I find this to be a fine summation of the problem. The man is profoundly stupid and that will influence how he addresses China, Syria, Russia, etc....

Hey andrew was an avowed racist. Famous for Moving Indians off their lands, slaves. What do you expect from don the con? Jackson justified this by his racist belief that native tribes were uncultured “savages” who could be transformed “from barbarism to the habits and enjoyments of civilized life.”

We heard about Obama's 57 states comment for 8 years from the Con media and Republicans. Trump says stupid thing 1-2 times a week and it's nothing but silence from the Con media.

it really is sickening how hard and hateful they were on Obama, but now they either look the other way with Trump's many, MANY screw-ups or they scream 'fake news'.

Pitiful.

Well his ignorance in regards to the history of China and North Korea was improved by a 10 minute lecture from Xi Jinping. You don't think such egregious ignorance meaningfully impacts those issues?

I know huh?

"People don't realize, you know, the Civil War, if you think about it, why? People don't ask that question, but why was there the Civil War? "

People don't ask that question. lol. Except for the millions upon millions of people who did ask that question -- and the tens of hundreds of thousands of books, articles and other explications of it.

Context;

"People don't realize, the Civil War, if you think about it, why? People don't ask that question, but why was there the Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?" President Trump questioned. "I mean had Andrew Jackson been a little bit later you wouldn't have had the Civil War. He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart."

If the war was decades in the making as the author states, then why wouldn't Jackson have had some position on the issue?

I'll bet that cheeseburger eating so and so doesn't eat snails!

Of course he would have had a "position" because the slavery question was pervasive. Jackson was a proud slaveowner, btw. At the time of Jackson's death the question had not evolved to one of war or peace.

OK I accept the answer.

Wonder what he thinks of the Russian Revolution and what happened to the Romanovs?

Off topic, but I had nightmares when I first learned about what they did to those children. Terrible, horrific, cruel.

Back to the topic of Trump. Sometimes I really don't know what's going through his mind. I think he likes to sound impressive. This time he didn't.

"He was really angry that he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War. He said, 'There's no reason for this,'" Trump continued.
