Trump invokes emergency powers to sidestep Congress and sell arms to Saudi Arabia

And you guys thought it was bad when the last President did it, now you're trying to deflect from your hypocrisy by pointing out that of others.

"You guys"?

Not sure who you think I am, I do not like it when either side does it. However I am getting a chuckle when 6 years ago Democrats were saying "We are doing it, so stuff it" to the Republicans as their President did something. And are now whining and crying when the same thing is done in reverse.

YOu might want to think more carefully, and not come off so adversarial. Notice I am not commenting for or against either of them, just laughing at the reactions.

It is something they do not like, that is the problem.

Oh, they loved it when the last President used Executive Action to go around anything that Congress told him no about. But how dare this President try to do the exact same thing!

It is not even the issue that matters, it is just that like the past President Congress told him no, so he ignored them. But it is alright to do that, so long as you have a (D) after your name.

Using executive action isn't the issue. It's appeasing the enemy that is the issue. Trump makes neville chamberlain look like FDR.

He's excercising legal authority. Hust because you don't agree with his decision doesn't mean he's acting like a king. But, you're going to bitch no matter what he does, so what makes you think your assessment has any credibility?

What emergency is present that satisfies the law?

The president has determined that the Iranian threat qualifies. Just because Deuce doesn't agree doesn't make it illegal.

Turkey is am ally, it is not the enemy.

I wish there was a way to mend fences between the Kurds and Turkey. As far as allies go in that particular region, that would be optimum. Imagine the possibilities.

Sorry to jump topic.

Does anyone need more proof this guy is a *****? He sells arms to the same country that attacked us on 9-11. Obama kills terrorists. This guy pays them. Weakest president since george w bush.

He's worse than Bush. Bush was at least human.

The problem is larger than that. The area the Kurds claim covers parts of Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Armenia.

Short of all 5 of those countries relinquishing part of their territory to create "Kurdistan", it is not likely they will ever be happy.

Have you forgotten 9/11???

Have read a history book?? The attack on 9/11 wasn't a Saudi government operation. Not one of the attackers was a government agent. Al Qaeda was based in Afghanistan, not Saudi Arabia.

Is that why US courts allowed families of 9-11 victims to sue saudi arabia? Why would our honored institutions allow that if there was no connection?

That power is in the law. What's the problem?

Yes, but one is accountable for how one uses one's power. Using power for the wrong purpose is called abuse of power, which can be a crime and most certainly is an impeachable offense.

Good luck proving that with this deal...lol

That doesn't change the historical fact. The courts named Iran a defendent in the Khobar Tower bombing. Are you equally as miffed at Iran?

As usual, it's a humanitarian crisis about the oil, and we're helping making it worse.

Trump invokes emergency powers to sidestep Congress and sell arms to Saudi Arabia | The Independent

The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, told the leaders of several congressional committees the president was claiming a national emergency existed because of a purported threat from Iran and was, as a result, giving permission for 22 arms deals with around $8bn (£6.3bn).

All he has to do is claim an emergency and he can do whatever. What happens if he loses in 2020? Will he declare an emergency?

Gosh. It's almost enough to make you think that maybe the Congress has given far too much authority to the Presidency, and we need to take power back from an active Executive, put it in the Legislature, and then take power from the federal government, and give it back to the states.

The same Yemen that is 29th in known oil reserves?

Just ahead of Great Britain...

Sounds like the Iraq "war for oil" BS.

Don't you see on the map where Yemen is situated? It is situated at the entrance to the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, which links the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean (via the Gulf of Aden) and is one of the most active and strategic shipping lanes in the world. OIL!!!

We are the government. Why are we doing such silly things?

Not OIL....

Of course it is, it's always about the oil. One obstruction in that shipping lane would cripple the oil coming from Saudi Arabia, why do you think they want to kill every human in Yemen. The US has a military air base in Yemen, the largest base inside of Yemen. It didn't stop the Saudis from bombing civilians though. Last August, the Saudis bombed Yemen and hit a school bus with 14 school children inside, killing all of them. An investigation by a Yemen human rights groups collected fragments of those bombs and determined they were made right here in the 'good old USA'. Yah, 'MAGA' -- selling arms to Saudi Arabia to murder school kids.
