... now that the Dems took control of Congress
Since the Democrats have a majority in ONLY the House of Representatives while the Republicans have the majority in the Senate, isn't it just as correct to say that "the Republicans have control of Congress"?
After all, if you define "control" as "can reliably get legislation passed" then the Democrats DO NOT have that ability and thus DO NOT "control Congress".
Now if you define "control" as "can reliably PREVENT legislation being passed" then BOTH the Democrats AND the Republicans DO have that ability and thus DO "control Congress".
I cannot recall the source (or even when I first heard it), but I do recall a quote along the lines of:
The mechanism of the American government was designed to rein in a naturally fractious people while the mechanism of the Canadian government was designed to spur on a naturally phlegmatic one.
and, if that is, indeed, the case, then both governmental mechanisms are functioning as "Originally Intended" - wouldn't you say?
