How'd that work out for the pork plant in SD?

Sent from my SM-N970U using Tapatalk

SD is a state with a stupid governor which refused to enact "social distancing" rules. As a result, they have one of the fastest growing clusters in the country.

Coronavirus cases skyrocket in South Dakota

The number of confirmed cases in the state has risen from 129 to 988 since April 1 — when Gov. Kristi Noem criticized the “draconian measures” of social distancing to stop the spread of the virus in her state.

Stupid is as stupid does. And, these Republicans do a lot of stoopid.

Yes a government that is competent and wise seeks advice and counsel from experts, in this instance, medical science. Government consults and government decides.

So pardon me because I too get the impression reading the thread -- to include the poll -- this may not be clear to everyone.

So let me make this clear: I do agree it's the governor's call. That's why they were elected in the first place -- to govern the state. The issue here is that there are people out there that basically argue, "ignore the health experts and scientists. We know better than them. It's more important that people work. Old people should be sacrificing themselves for the good of the economy". My feeling is the gradual system, where we slowly, but carefully remove the restrictions. We don't jump into things.

Perhaps it comes from my misunderstanding of others views. My feeling is we see what happens for the rest of the month. In May, we loosen some restrictions, if things are getting better.

About as well as Wuhan worked out for the Chinese. You DO know that the Chinese own that pork plant, right?

Capitalism...YEAY!

Capitalism...YEAY!

Actually, it's the political part of capitalism. You know...the part where our politicians, for more than 30 years, have been encouraging China to take ownership of more and more of our country.

You know it was the workers having to go to work there, with little to no protection that lead to the outbreak right?

Do you have evidence that the Chinese own that Smithfield plant?

If you were obeying the lock down, you shouldn't know that fact. It's people like yourself that are going to be the cause of the virus coming back.

Ignore Don the Con and listen to the doctors.[/QUOTE

Well, unless you're a "prepper" with a years worth of supplies, you HAVE to get out once in a while. And while you're out you're eyes and ears still work, so you can be observant. That crashes your little theory. BTW; the Don has done a great job. Not his fault if Americans are stubborn.

Yeah, there's lots of "evidence".

Smithfield Foods, Inc., is a meat-processing company based in Smithfield, Virginia, in the United States, and a wholly-owned subsidiary of WH Group of China.[a] Founded in 1936 as the Smithfield Packing Company by Joseph W. Luter and his son, the company is the largest pig and pork producer in the world.[5] In addition to owning over 500 farms in the US, Smithfield contracts with another 2,000 independent farms around the country to grow Smithfield's pigs.[6] Outside the US, the company has facilities in Mexico, Poland, Romania, Germany, and the United Kingdom.[7] Globally the company employed 50,200 in 2016 and reported an annual revenue of $14 billion.[3] Its 973,000-square-foot meat-processing plant in Tar Heel, North Carolina, was said in 2000 to be the world's largest, processing 32,000 pigs a day.[8]

btw, Smithfield is no stranger to bad worker's conditions.

Working conditions

Human Rights Watch (HRW) issued a 175-page report in 2005 documenting what it said were unsafe work conditions in the US meat and poultry industry, citing working conditions at Smithfield Foods as an example.[125][126][127][128][129][130] In particular, the report said, workers make thousands of repetitive motions with knives during each shift, leading to lacerations and repetitive strain injuries. It also alleged that the workers' immigrant status may be exploited to prevent them from making complaints or forming unions.[125][123] According to the report, the speed at which the pigs are killed and processed makes the job inherently dangerous for workers.[127] A Smithfield manager testified in 1998, during an unfair labor practices trial, that at the Tar Heel plant in North Carolina it takes 5–10 minutes to slaughter and complete the process of "disassembly" of an animal, including draining, cleaning, and cleaving. One worker told HRW that the disassembly line moves so fast that there is no time to sharpen the knives, which means harder cuts have to be made, with the resultant injuries to workers.[131] Similar criticism was made by other groups about Smithfield facilities in Poland and Romania.[97] The American Meat Institute stated that the report was "replete with falsehoods and baseless claims".[127] The United Food and Commercial Workers Union used the report in its appeals to consumers and civil rights groups during its dispute with Smithfield.[128]

And they were just bought within the last 8 years by Chinese owners, but have mainly American CEOs, executives. The company is run, based in the US.

If we flattened or began our down-slope this week, we might be able to open May 1.

Using a standard distribution curve for illustration, we must maintain measures all the way down the right side of the curve until it reaches about 95% at which point the "bell" flares right. When that flare begins, and we're 95% done, we can start opening.

It will require at least two weeks down the right side of the curve to reach a standard deviation (or two) before relaxing measures.

We looked to be flattening until yesterday when deaths spiked. We could still flatten this week.

June 1 is more likely than May 1, and more likely somewhere between.

As I pointed out long ago, nothing but covid-19 exists anymore. Therefore, every university should be closed down EXCEPT for offering degrees in biology limited to viruses. There is such thing as any expert relevant to any other aspect of else - not social, economic, justice or even any medical matter other than viruses. That is a proven fact.

No one - ever - should listen to anyone about anything whatsoever - personally, professionally or in government. All persons in the government who are not experts in viruses - or work for such experts - are absolutely worthless and pointless. Whatever experts on viruses is what - and only what - should be done about anything, ever.

Tragic to learn that after all the years, all your studies were absolutely irrelevant and worthless, huh? If only you had studied about viruses you could share in ruling the United States and everyone now.

Since the public and businesses, not the Governors or President, will have the say over when to reduce social distancing and reopen the economy, are you personally ready? Is May 1st, long enough, especially if they come out with nationwide saliva testing?

Now, I know there will be staggered openings, depending on the curve and which states have the sickest, but some are saying as long as 2022 now. I don't think I could handle that long voluntarily, nor could the economy.

If we open too soon, the consequences are going to be MUCH worse than if we just wait a few extra weeks for the virus to go away here.

Are you willing to enter the work force as a grocery employee, nursing home worker, janitorial worker, cleaning crew in a hospital ,pharmacy employee, in a mortuary ? If so, go to work.
Here's the thing. We all can do things to build up our immune system. Germs and viruses can't get us if our immune system is intact. The reason we get hit by viruses etc is because our immune system is compromised in some way. All those sickly people with diabetes and lung problems and all the other illnesses that wreak havoc on their immune systems are the ones getting sick.

If you take care of your immune system then you don't have to fear coming down with illness. It's science.

You never answered my question.

Good health to you.

For starters, I don't see why we have to rush anything. Most businesses are open. Restaurants have adjusted to take-out life. You can get your car fixed. I agree we need to lift the bandaid, but it should be done in a slow and gradual fashion. Maybe loosing up the restrictions every week, as soon as the curve flattens. Right now we need to have the right medicines and proper testing. Your life, your family's life, are more important than a month or two of business slow downs. As long as the government is providing us relief, we should be okay. To put it this way: economies go through cycles, families and friends last forever. I place more value on human life than the value of the buck. But that's just me.

Things have been getting steadily worse where I live. I used to be able to go walk at the local park for my daily walks, but they shut that down. Even though everyone was keeping their distance, parking lot is closed. They also shut down the local lake parking lot. You can't even sit in your car and look at the lake. Lot is closed, and that happened within the last week.

I have even seen flashing signs on the side of the road telling us to stay home and keep our distance. Real creepy. I feel like I am in the twilight zone.

Let's open 'er back up, starting with the places where people can easily keep their distance while getting sun on their skin, going for walks and jogs, and getting much needed mental health breaks.

Or just maybe it's people like them who are going to get the economy going back to a roar. It's all a matter of opinion.

I am 70 yrs old, retired, but still doing care giving for an elderly gentleman. I do plenty of work. Plus I write part time. I would not like to be in the situation of being a front liner in this pandemic, but if I was a working girl I would do it. Just arm myself with a killer immune system to the best of my ability.

I have had plenty of jobs where I was dealing with the public all day throughout my career and I've seldom been sick. I just do all I can to stay healthy. It's been a life-long practice.

hermit, I don't think that is enough, though I admire your positive gung ho attitude.

Let the govt listen to the scientists.

This "lock down" is a joke. Whatever that virus is going to do it is going to do, because many people aren't really paying attention to the experts.

Not here... people are out biking or walking but clearly stay apart when approaching/passing others... other than some exercising people this place is a ghost town. Of course, only 1,500 people live here but as I went into town this morning (about 20 miles away) to go to the grocery store, it was pretty damn shut down.

Science tells us that we come down with these viruses when our immune system is compromised. If your immune system is doing its job, you won't get sick. You have to admit that with 7.8 billion people on the planet, most of us are not getting sick from this virus.

People like Bill Gates who is in bed with big pharma wants us to panic and live in fear until we can get vaccinated. BS. Bill Gates is not to be trusted.

Neither do I trust any "scientist" who is part of the establishment.
