I am not sure that "rape" is the right word.

Sally Hemings worked for two and a half years (1787-89) in Paris as a domestic servant and maid in Jefferson’s household, not a slave. While in Paris, where she was free, she negotiated with Jefferson to return to enslavement at Monticello in exchange for “extraordinary privileges” for herself and freedom for her unborn children. Decades later, Jefferson freed all of Sally Hemings’s children – Beverly and Harriet left Monticello in the early 1820s; Madison and Eston were freed in his will and left Monticello in 1826.

Jefferson was a complicated man, and a man of his time. He really did think slavery was evil, and did, or tried to do, a lot to end the institution. But he knew that a sudden stop to it would mean economic devastation for the entire nation. The entire country was literally running on slave labor.
