The state can sieze your assets

You think there would be fallout for people being told to pay their bills?

Will there be fallout from Obamacare regulations to empty out your bank account, leaving you unable to pay the rent, buy groceries? Uh...yeah!...lol!

That only happens if someone doesn't pay their bills. People need to be responsible for the decisions that they make in life, don't you agree? No more free rides and leaving their debts to the state.

You're happy about this right? People taking personal responsibility for their bills?

Absolutely, why should the kids be able to keep the family farm if dad gets sick and runs up a big tab during the last two years of his life? Those kids had an irresponsible dad and should not get to keep that farmland - they didn't build that. Dad should have manned up and committed suicide to save that house, barn and modest plot of land that had been in the family since 1845. ;)

You have to remember it is a mandated bill by the government. not whether or not they could afford the bill to begin with. they have no choice in the bill that
they would get.

That is why forced mandates are pretty much stupid or at least the coverages that obamacare is offering are idiotic.

an all cash system is the only way to go.
all tax brackets are lowered to a 2 tier system. if you make < 500K a year then you will pay 5% taxes if you make more than 500K a year then you will pay 10% with deductions capped at 10% of your gross earnings (including capital gains).

capital gains will be taxed at the same amount of 15%.

no pay roll taxes will be replaced with 1 tax of 10%. 5% from you and 5% from your company. this goes into a retirement/healthcare pool.
if you make less than 500k a year you will get a health credit of 2500 dollars that can be spent on any medical need not including what you put in.

corporate taxes will be lowered to 10% with the deductions being expanstion, healthcare (giving companies more reason to put money into your healthcare account).
and 2 times a year they can bring in money from overseas tax free if it is to be used for expansion purposes in the US.

that right there would get companies and people moving into higher tax brackets. the economy would boom and the government would lift undo burdens of social programs
that it cannot hope to fulfill.

Sounds like the good ol' days of the, "poor house". Can't wait!

Obama will have to retire to another continent, after Obamacare is in full swing...lol!

You are darned right! Kick them dang kids out of the house it is now state property fair and square. Equity in a home is a bad investment because you can't pass it on, best borrow it all out and give it away to the kids (off the books of course). ;)

Why do you think it was phased in? Surly not to ensure a smooth rollout. ;)

Oh yeah! Screw bankruptcy! The government will take all your ****!

Actually it may be pure progressive political genius. If the poor kids can't keep the family farm or gas station when their parents get sick and die then why should those rich folks' kids get to keep stuff when their parents get sick and die? Wealth redistribution is needed for that to happen. ;)

Nobody forces anyone to take medicaid. No more free rides. Isn't "welfare" one of the things people complain about more than anything on this forum? If someone wants the government handout then they should be careful. Furthermore...

Some 55- to 64-year-olds, who may have taken early retirement or who were laid off during the recession, have found themselves plunged into a low-income bracket. Unlike Medicaid recipients in the past — who were required to reduce their assets to qualify — they’re more likely to have a home or other assets.
Who in their right mind retires early anyway? You've got to be spectacularly stupid to do so when you're barely on medicaid. Again this is a matter of people taking personal responsibility. As for people losing their homes that they intended to give their children, will that house away so it's no longer your asset. Of course this option isn't going to be available in every state. Simple, common sense. Once again, people need to take personal responsibility.

“People will think this is wonderful, this is free insurance,” [Dr. Jane] Orient said in an interview. “They don’t realize it’s really a loan, and is secured by any property they have.”
Nothing is free and it's time people learned that. Thank goodness Obama is making people take personal responsibility. Bush passed a prescription drug plan for seniors with no way or intention to pay for it.

wow that's powerful......I have to give a :bravo: for the way it sounded as I read it....

"You" in this scenario is...the dead person?

I want to thank the people on this thread for proving why UHC is the way to go!

I agree, Obamacare is a crappy solution to an even crappier problem.

UHC is the way to go!

You really need to lay off the political porn. It's fantasy and healthy. This is an absurd extrapolation of the facts designed to raise the blood pressure of those that do not really understand how this actually works. Congrats, you have been used.

Not sure of all the in's and outs...but this already happens today with people on Medicare. I have a friend who's mother recently had to be placed in an assisted care facility. They had to sell off EVERYTHING she owned. Her debts were greater than her income capacity.

The only problem I have with this under the ACA is if people are forced into the system that would not have otherwise chosen to go into the system. Oh...sure...they could choose not to sign up at all...then they would just have to pay their fine for NOT choosing to go into the system. What a ****ed up law.

Its over the top...but its not at all absurd. Even very liberal sites like the Daily KOS can see it. What is absurd is that people like you are running around with your eyes held tightly shut and your hands over your ears screaming "I'M NOT LISTENING!!! I'M NOT LISTENING!!! LA LA LA LA LA LA!!!!"

Daily Kos: Medicaid Estate Recovery + ACA: Unintended Consequences?

Nobody is required to sign up for medicaid. They can sign up for individual plans through the exchange.

If they are below the poverty level they wont be able to afford them. Medicaid IS the provisional plan for people below the poverty level in many states.

Of course...you ARE correct in that they cant be forced to sign up. They can just refuse to sign up for ANYTHING, take their chances...oh yeah...and pay a nice fine.

If they have enough assets to be worried about losing everything then they should be able to find a way to get an individual plan.

Do the chant thing now.. O Bama. O Bama. O Bama.

Yes. Exactly. It's not easy to get on Medicaid. They kicked my ex-wife out when her SS check hit $970. She still get a break on her Medicare, about $120 worth. But she owns absolutely nothing. I have tenants on Medicaid, living in houses they short sold me after the collapse. If it wasn't for me, these people would be near homeless. And they can't get Medicaid even though they would like to instead of actually paying for Medicare.

So, sorry, I can't buy in to the family farm thing. If you have assets, you shouldn't be sucking up Medicaid dollars. Medicaid is for the very poor and it's not mandatory. If you have assets, you need to buy adequate insurance for yourself and your stuff.
