The Government Is Ready to Reopen. Its Citizens Aren’t, Polls Show. - The New York Times

Two months after the coronavirus shuttered much of the United States economy, the outbreak’s impact — on jobs, health care, food access and much more — is growing only more severe, according to a growing body of polling and social science data.

But here’s what else the polls are telling us: Americans are generally uninterested in returning to normal, and they tend to believe federal health experts, who continue to warn against a swift reopening of the economy.

President Trump said this week that he was eager “to get our country open again,” adding, “People want to go back, and you’re going to have a problem if you don’t do it.”

But more than two-thirds of respondents said in a Pew Research Center poll out Thursday that they were more concerned that state governments would reopen their economies too quickly than that they might take too long — roughly on par with past responses to the same question.

Next month will be interesting.

I think some people are getting used to collecting checks from the state by doing nothing and staying at home. The vacation is over. Time to get back to work!

You are joking, right? One check since shelter at home went into effect in March is a vacation? What reality do you live in?

The CEC bubble, because that's what they're telling their audience.

Make the ****ing tests and test more people.

$1,200 in stimulus
$600 x 5 in unemployment

= $4,200 not including unemployment from the state. Not bad for about one month.

Reopen... But the issues with the economy are too severe for that to be effective.

You can’t fix the demand side and you can’t magically undo the damage Covid, even without lock down has caused.

People don’t wanna fly, just as an example, they don’t want to travel at all.

Airlines, their parts suppliers, food suppliers, the cities they fly to, the people who go through the airports, on to hotels, venues, restaurants, excursions, casinos... even without a lockdown, very few are gonna go anyway, millions upon millions upon millions of jobs right there you can’t just magically make reappear again, based on the dire numbers I’ve seen, it could take 10 years or more to undo the damage this has done to the travel industry.

Very few people care to heed my point, the lockdowns are only one part of the equation, even without them there has been a collapse in demand for basically everything except essentials.

Economics is a social science and we can’t see every eventuality but this will be the deepest recession in modern history by a country mile and won’t be easily undone.

I am not quite so pessimistic, Stores are starting to open and people were out and about today, but seem to be exercising social distancing.
and for the most part wearing masks.
I agree it will be a while before people start casually traveling, going to Las Vegas, ect.
I do not expect to go to the movies for many months, and we used to go almost weekly.
Europe and other destinations are likely off the table for a while also.

I think the Clinton/Trump polls back in 2016 showed that a lot of polling underrepresents the working class- people have to be home to answer the phone when the pollster calls and have the time to spare online, etc.

There are a lot of working class people out there getting screwed right now

The demand collapsed because people aren't working and the ones that aren't spending any money.

I think there is also a lot of physiology related to uncertainty.
Even if a person is working, but seeing the news every night about millions who are out of work.
They might delay or put off a big purchase until things settle out a bit.
So many people out working today, have never experienced this type of difficulty.
Going through hard times, like not having an income when all the bills are due, changes your life priorities a bit.

They're there, now. So what's the difference?

The difference is that the support they have now goes away once you open things up. There are many businesses that don't want to open, to protect themselves and their employees. Business lose eligibility for some of the bailout funds when they are technically allowed to open. So they open to try and scrape at least a few dollars. Of course, they need employees to do that. They don't want to endanger their employees, but they have to have someone and if they are allowed to bring the employees back and choose not to, now the unemployment benefits fall more on the business. So they offer the job back. Now the employee doesn't want to come back either, but they just got an offer so now they're not eligible for unemployment.

The small business is kicked off its lifeline, its employees are kicked off their lifeline, they all go back to work and endanger themselves and they hardly do any business because nobody wants to go out to eat at restaurants or go to movie theaters right now. How is this better for anyone other than a government accountant?

Which is precisely why it was futile to hand bags of cash to large corporations. If you want to prop up the economy, give money to the people who actually drive it.

This meltdown proves just how hollow all the right-wing rhetoric is regarding the working class and their financial situation. Constant berating over them spending more than they can afford, not living within their means, those darn millenials and their avocado toast, etc, and it turns out multi-billion dollar corporations can't survive even a few weeks without exactly that behavior.

Last night on my local social media the question was asked if people were ready for things to open. The majority (like 90%) said no. Most understand that places need to eventually open, however most have zero desire to head out to any of them right now.

So where does that leave the business? They open, they bring back their workers and then what? Would a place that had 200+ customers a day and suddenly has maybe 20 keep their doors open? Would they keep a full staff? I highly doubt it.

Clearly there is no simple answer, but I think rushing to open up could seriously backfire so severely that the past two months will look like a minor detail. I hope that's not the case but rushing on almost anything often leads to failure.

Maybe. One argument against your prediction is the stock market. It's more than halfway recovered from what it lost between the high on February 20 and the recent low on March 23. It's currently just above where it was a year ago.

The stock market isn't the economy, but it is the best best guess of how the economy is going to function in the future, by the people with the most to gain or lose. To them, the future is apparently fairly bright.

Open up the economy and let capitalism take care of things. Government handouts don't drive the economy.

I agree, and not because I hate business or because I hate Trump, although I certainly do hate Trump. I love my neighborhood bakery and fear it will never reopen. Also my neighbor hood bar and movie theater. But if we reopen too soon, and the virus comes back, then we'll have to start all over. That will double the recovery time (or more) and make survival of some business even less likely.

Mother Nature is doing her part keeping people indoors here. At this moment it is SNOWING... And there's a hard freeze warning out for tonight.. Lol

Middle of May and it's snowing.. It ain't nice to fool with Mother Nature.. Somebody must have done pissed her off.

Here in the Seattle area we're having our first taste of summer. Almost 80 degrees! This stay-at-home stuff is way easier when it's sunny and warm.

That coincidence is quite interesting. New virus thst can't live in hot weather and winter extends into mid-May.
