He almost takes away the sting of embarrassment with Michele Bachmann.

Almost.

welcome back, pretty girl.

Ah Franken, I love you. :) Watching the FotF guy squirm trying to wiggle around his own lies was quite entertaining.

...And welcome back Ms. Boop!

A lot of the documentation that Michelle Bachman incidentally attached herself to takes a look at "neoconservative" (there's a problem there, but Moynihan, Glazer, and Wilson are attached to some of the ethos, with at least Moynihan's name mentioned in the document provided by the Family Research Council) literature and draws more connective tissue than what was mostly intended. It is true that Moynihan and others thought of the problem of the family from a more traditional lens (that of mother and father, and children in same household), yet I do not think their conclusions in of themselves, in addition to more contemporary studies, suggested that once you are of the same-sex the effects are thus automatically diminished. What many of them were looking for was a means of seeing what could be done about their contemporary problem with the break-up of the family, argued because of measures in the Great Society programs they themselves had supported and perhaps tried to help develop.

Is Franken drunk, or just stupid?

I'd like either one of you to point out how he is incorrect in this.

I have two points here...

1. Although the study doesn't specify that the parents of nuclear family are a man and woman, it also doesn't specify that the parents can be same sex. So it seems to me, that Franken has also made an assumption.

2. I looked up the definition of "Nuclear Family" and here's what I found:
Merriam-Webster - a family group that consists only of father, mother, and children.
Dictionary.com - a social unit composed of father, mother, and children.
Freedictionary.com - A family unit consisting of a mother and father and their children.
Oxford Dictionary of Archaeology - A family group consisting of wife, husband (or one of these) and dependent children.
MacmillanDictionary.com - a family unit consisting of a mother, a father, and their children.
MedicineNet.com - The family group consisting of the father, mother, and their children, as distinct from the extended family.
SocialScienceDictionary.com - A basic family group consisting of married female and male parents and dependent children, living away from other relatives.
Yourdictionary.com - A family unit consisting of a mother and father and their children.
MedicalDictionary.freedictionary.com - A family unit consisting of a mother and father and their progeny.

*

I can dig up plenty more that say the same thing... How many credible definitions can you find that specify that gay parents also qualify as a "nuclear family?"

I think I've made my point... Franken is a Bozo who twists words into meanings to fit his political agenda... It may get a few laughs, but it's dishonest and disingenuous never the less.

Wasn't he a comedian? Maybe he is writing new jokes and practicing them for now.

Well, you can use dictionaries as your evidence, but numerous studies show no difference in outcome with same-sex couples raising children.

And this supports what Franken said exactly how?

And this supports what Franken said exactly how?

Because if DHHS only referenced opposite-sex couples and same-sex couples actually had the detriments proposed by the "family values" idiot, their findings would be oddly different from virtually every other study on the subject.

Seeing as how they very specifically did not reference gender, I'm inclined to believe that gender doesn't matter given the other evidence on the subject.

If you could find the actual study being referenced, maybe you could prove your point. Go ahead and link it!

Franken cited the study, which I will link here: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/series/sr_10/sr10_246.pdf

Furthermore, Franken is correct. The study specifically says "A nuclear family consists of one or more children living with two parents who are married to one another and are each biological or adoptive parents to all children in the family". It says nothing about a nuclear family being restricted to the opposite sex. And since it is that very study that the FotF guy used in order to back up his claim, perhaps he should have actually read the study rather than attempt to twist it to support his stupid position.

Such a brilliant analysis. You must have graduated from LSU. Not being as politically astute as you I would greatly benefit from your instruction. Can you please tell me specifically how Sen. Franken in the context of the OP is a clown?

Thanks in advance.

I hate to be a buzz-kill, but Frankin was wrong and so is anyone who believes his BS... And I can prove it.

On September 21, 1996, Bill Clinton signed into federal law the "Defense of Marriage Act" also known as "DOMA", which has never been overturned or repealed. Here's what is stated in In section 3 of that law:

Definition of marriage
In determining the meaning of any Act of Congress, or of any ruling, regulation, or interpretation of the various administrative bureaus and agencies of the United States, the word 'marriage' means only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife, and the word 'spouse' refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife.

Since DHHS and the CDC are both federal agencies, they are forbidden by federal law to recognise "marriage" as anything but a legal union of a man and woman. Therefore when they stated "A nuclear family consists of one or more children living with two parents who are married to one another and are each biological or adoptive parents to all children in the family", they were referring only to parents of the opposite sex.

Any questions?

Being the honest folks you are, I'll be expecting a few retractions.

What the hell does a legal document or definition have to do with raising kids? Seriously.

Not recognizing SSM legally does not mean they can't study SSM's, or recognize their existence. Just admit it, Al Franken owned the guy, plain, and simple. Doesn't mean you have to like him, it's just pointing out a fact.

Oh, don't worry about being a buzzkill. You're not, you've just simply made an error here. DOMA was signed into law by Clinton, and the word 'marriage' under that law may mean only between a man or a woman, but in case you've been sleeping the last few years, there are now a number of states where marriage is not only between a man and a woman, but between two women, or two men. In addition, the CDC is not bound by such a regulation, as this is clearly a scientific study that sampled married couples who were not limited to the DOMA definition of marriage. In fact, the study specifically mentions this that includes not only "traditional" unions, but married partners as well (page 15, 16).

We can put your little theory to the test, if you so desire. Given that the study specifically states the definition that it used, I want you to browse that entire study and find where it exclusively states that a nuclear family is between one man and one woman. I've already showed you where it doesn't, but the best way to teach someone is to have them actually read and learn for themselves.

Enjoy!

Thank you for that. And since you seem pretty dead set on being honest, I expect your next post to be an admittance that Franken is correct.

That's a great way to put it.

Is Franken drunk, or just stupid?

I think some measure of intelligence goes to this:

Or are you against SSM, therefore? Here he is on another subject which you may find less objectionable. On the other hand, for all I know, you're in favor of rape.

Sen. Al Franken Stands Up to Support KBR Rape Victim and Others Like Her | Crooks and Liars

Oh. Gee. What a Surprise.

Thirty Republican senators voted against Al Franken's amendment, thus showing their support for gang rape by government contractors. And may I say, I'm not surprised.

I didn't expect much from franken, and haven't followed him, but he seems reasonable and logical here. Does that buy an pause or desire to hear more to see if your view holds merit? Same question for you apdst.

Here he is, calming down a crowd.

I'll even put up with Coulter to see him speak.
