Texas power cooperative files for bankruptcy PROTECTION, citing $1.8 billion grid debt (and they need a bailout)

Interesting, no? Socialize the debts?
I KNEW the taxpayers would foot the bill for Texas' private grid.

Privatize the gains. Socialize the losses.

This is the kind of "capitalism" conservatives have provided America.

they can take the profits that they saved during better times and use that money to buy bootstraps, right?

I hope Texans smarten-up, after this fiasco.

Yep, knock me over with a feather.

Don't hold you breath, I'm not. We have a lot of dumb asses in this state. It's improving, but slowly.

Believe me, I'm not going to beat on Texans - though. I think all of us want a little of that stereotyped Texan rugged, self-sufficient, individualism. I get that. But it has to be done in context.

Wow, you could learn one or two things about this instead of just projecting your biases.

Almost all electric grid assets in the US are privately owned. In the case the bankrupt entity is a co-op, which is as close to socialism as it gets in the US power world probably.

And in a bankruptcy “taxpayers”don’t foot the bill, creditors do.

Absolutely not. Seize their assets and prosecute those in management who allowed it to happen to increase profits. Reorganize the assets as a not-for-net profit publicly owned co-operative utility.

Sure seems like that is what is being done. The offshoot of not having a state income tax and a part-time government more focused on national events than nuts and bolts local issues is that very basic services are often not glamorous enough to garner the attention of state law makers. The other thing is that, for the most part, they are largely incompetent. Dan Patrick--the Lt. Governor--was a sportcaster by trade. He had some name recognition which lead to his getting involved in politics and now he essentially runs the state. The result...when the temperature gets moderately cold, we have abysmal power failures and, like clockwork, it will flood in many communities across Texas this spring/summer. Guaranteed. On the bright side, there are no regulators so the plants that will have leaks and explosions will be quickly taken off the front pages by the "natural disasters" that happen with shocking regularity.

It happens all the time, this crazy capitalism of mine, wraps around my heart and tears my wallet apart. I have said numerous times and will repeat it here again. The R's are the true socialists. They brag about their beloved free market capitalism until it crashes and we the taxpayers have to pay for what the super wealthy ****ed up.
