Texas Burning

I think he means Governor Perry. Obama's incapable of lying. ;)

Obama says plenty of stupid things, a little light on actual lies, tho, compared to our last president, who I beleive is some sort of Texan, right?

I'm still confused...what exactly is "the truth," who is lying, and what about precisely?

I can't help you, I am not an 8th grade english teacher....did you read post 24 again?
The reporter is saying that TX politicians are lying.....

I understand THAT much. However I don't have the details and about what precisely they are lying. Luckily I just did a google search for the Star Telegram article and am reading it right now.

You're a Texan, right? What say you?

No. In order to be a "Texan" you must be born there. I lived in Texas for nearly a decade. As for what say I? There's a song that best sums up my thoughts.

We don't need no water, let the mother ****er burn. Burn mother ****er, burn.

That's harsh bro.

The ones who are miserable just move to Austin.

I hear Austin is nice, must be the high density of liberals there....as opposed to the republicans in the rest of the state, who are just dense....

Funny that I'm the one who gets lectured for being disrespectful and insensitive. Still, sounds like you're just citing Obama's policy on this so I can't be too pissed. Shoot, I may make this my sig.

There was a link, but I can't make it work...

Yeah, libs like this, huh? ;)

Is he from Austin? or a democrat? or a professed liberal?
2 out of 3?
From what I read, most of the fires are in rural areas. What is Obama supposed to do, reseed the area with more scrub brush, creosote bushes, tumbleweeds?

I'd love to see you prove that false allegation.

Prove which false allegation? That Conservatives are now looking to big government to save them?

Look, if you think you can solve your own problems without government, what is it that you want Obama to do? The fact that you all are now criticizing this makes me wonder if you think the government is only too big when it's not helping you.

Considering you said we should let the debt ceiling go south instead of "expecting the government to feed everybody"...do you think this **** comes for free? How does the harmful arm of big government pay to put out the fires? And why is it a federal responsibility?

All I'm saying is that your rhetoric is completely inconsistent. You don't want big government spending money. Fine. Who do you want to put out the fires, and how do you want them to do it?

X...you might want to cite my post to GeKaap. I wasn't really lecturing. I was stating the reality and seriousness of our situation.

Sorry GeKaap doesn't care about regular people (and maybe to GeKaap, Texans aren't) who are victims of genuinely nightmarish events that are incredibly overwhelming, destructive and to some even deadly.

Oh, and yes, I was born in Texas...so I might be a little prejudice about Texans burning to death or losing their homes.

Sounds like Texas politicians have had their rusted out Chrysler K car stolen and are reporting it to the insurance company as a mint condition collectible car.
Not too subtle, I hope. I know from experience how the education system in TX has gone from bad to worse. "No child left behind" was a Texan idea, right?

Pretty sure he's not a Republican, so that pretty much makes up for anything else, dontcha think?

It's funny how things turn around, isn't it. I remember Dems bashing Bush for not jumping up immediately upon being told of 9/11. I made the same sort of argument, what was he supposed to do?

RM, it is serious. If I've made it it seem that I don't think it is, then I'm sorry. My thoughts and prayers are with those who've lost homes and especially loved ones. Respectfully, I'm bowing out of this thread now.

Bill, actually "No Child Left Behind" was the idea of a guy from Connecticut who played like he's a Texan. The education system in Texas is beyond "worse". It is the defining state of the art "How to Dumb Down Your Kid's" school system. And yes, we have G.W. Bush and the Texas Education School Board, Oh...and Rick Perry to thank for this delighting system. Instead of learning how to read, write, and do math, the kids need to be praying and studying about intelligent design so they can take on an apprenticeship to learn to how to create a universe.

Hey man, JRR Tolkien and George Lucas created universes. It's not ALL bad

Had a bunch of friends lose beautiful property to the witch creek fire in CA.

Actually stayed with one friend to cut breaks and fight flareups on their property. Their place had BIG rockpiles and their home was in defensible space. So we opted to stay in. Saw a blood red moon.

Fire never made it to us. But another friend a short drive/long walk upwind lost an entire 640 acre section of virgin joshua tree desert. Several people I know lost homes as well.

The state had declared the fire contained/out and pulled the firefighters and aircraft out. Then it flared and ended up being one of the biggest fires in CA history.

One of the issues was firefighting aircraft jurisdiction/authority.

But long story short it wasn't a "disaster" of Federal proportions. Mostly.just open land burned. It was beautiful, but nothing but a lot of years is gonna fix it.

So for all you affected, I feel you. And maybe we should think about the fact that our military has all the tech and hardware they need to kick anyones ass, but we let wildfires kick our asses every year.

Maybe we should ask the Seals for advice.:2wave:

Although it is optimistic on my part, a major lesson that could be learned from this disaster is that state governments will take time to develop plans that help meet the demands of an ever growing population. Every Sun Belt state is growing rapidly and yet too many seem to waste valuable resources like water living a lifestyle that is not meant for the desert. So far the only plan I have ever seen from any Sun Belt politician is to steal water from the Great Lakes, even though they are at record lows as it is.

The other thing that makes me mortified about this whole situation is that Governor Perry has absolutely no solution to quell the wildfires without groveling to the federal government to step in. For a man who has preached secession in the past, he is woefully unprepared to put out the fires that are ravaging his state. The fact he is now down to praying for rain, rather than a legitimate plan, is embarrassing.

From the article that StillBallin75 posted it looks Texas would have been better prepared had the State Legislature decided to not cut the budget of the Texas Forest Service by 40%. Smart call on that one.

To all the Texans on this board, I hope you stay safe and out of harm's way. I may sound critical, but I would not wish for anyone to be in a similar situation.

When did I say I don't care about regular people? I just don't see the need for the federal government to pony up even more money than it already is. And I don't find it at all appropriate for Perry to expect the federal government to run in and save them. At the end of the day, this is Texas' problem. Where is all of Perry's rhetoric about a small federal government, state rights, personal responsibility, and secessionism? Where is Perry's same rhetoric that he spewed when he refused to accept any TARP money for Texas? I guess it all goes out the door as soon as Perry wants to score some political points. So as far as I'm concerned, let the mother ****er burn. Let the people of Texas start actually caring about the filth they elect into their government seats so that maybe, just maybe, they'll start some kind of positive changes away from the radical likes of Perry. That way, maybe next time I hear that a Texas Governor is complaining that the federal government isn't doing enough for the state, I can actually think that there might be some merit to his words.

Well if you're a Texan, it's usually state before country. Most people in Texas seem themselves as Texans first, Americans second. I wonder what Maryland would be like if we had "Maryland Pride." We'd probably all be Terrapin fans or something.

We are pretty proud of where we come from here. Having lived in a few other states (Indiana, Michigan, Florida, Oklahoma (messed up state, let me tell ya), and Northern California), Texas is different. I can't even explain it. I hate the heat and can't stand Houston, but if I was told I could live in Texas or pick anywhere else in the world I'd stay here.

No more harsh than constant Texan babbling about secession and hating the federal government.

it's a little bit different to joke about the possibility of stepping away from a train on it's way to wrecking and telling the people of Texas that because of their governor's attitude you're quite okay with them losing their homes, farms, ranches, cattle, livelihoods, etc.

It's heartless, tactless, and tasteless.
