TOPPENISH - A gutsy senior project by a Toppenish student has quickly earned her national attention. Gaby Rodriguez faked her own pregnancy for the assignment. When the story hit the paper this morning, Gaby was quickly overwhelmed with calls from national morning show outlets hoping to tell her story. Action News talked to her about why, and how, she pulled off the elaborate hoax.
And she wasn't the only one hurt for the sake of her senior project, faking a pregnancy to see how people would react. To succeed in the experiment, she lied to almost everyone in her life. Only a handful of people, including her mom, boyfriend, and principal knew the whole thing was a hoax.
"It was tough for all of us,” Orozco said. “We lied to a lot of people. A lot of people were upset when they found out."
Most of her siblings didn't even know the truth. Neither did her boyfriend's parents, thinking they were going to be grandparents. It's amazing the lie was pulled off at all.
Teen fakes pregnancy for school assignment. - CNN iReport
Note carefully - her mother, boyfriend and school principle DID know it was a hoax for 'research'
But regardless - I wouldn't tolerate lying FOR my child like the Mom did - I wouldn't put up with the humiliation and scrutiny of FAKING a pregnancy.
I think what they've done is horrendous - ESPECIALLY because they ruined the boyfriend's good family name through this - the boyfriends parents *didn't know* - Imagine the emotional trauma they went through.
What a bunch of bull**** - how unbelievably ridiculous that they let her do it. many of girls are REALLY pregnant and can tell you all about it if someone really wants ot know that badly.
I thought it was a brilliant way to find out how someone in that situation would actually be treated... without actually BEING in that situation. Apparently her schoolmates agree, as they gave her a standing ovation at the assembly where she came clean, so to speak.
It's like this... overweight people say 'you dont know what it's like, you're not fat"... so people have used fat suits and dont tv specials to show their treatment. Black people say 'you don't know what its like, you're not black'... so peple have used makeup, etc, to 'become balck for a day', etc. How is what thios girl did any different?
Holy ****, the world is going to end. I agree 100 %. The project was freaking brilliant. It's basically performance art, and like the best art, it serves to bring a lot of attention onto an issue.
You don't know what someone else goes thorugh until you walk a mile in their shoes. She just walked for 6 months.
Well its certainly creative.

Reminds me of "Black Like Me" by John Howard Griffin. If you haven't read it, you should. I would definitely allow my daughter to do this, if she wanted to.
As far as the boyfriend's parents, imagine how relieved they are.
I don't believe in giving my approval for my children lying. Even if the so called ends were to study reactions, and if not lying then teaching them that the ends justify the means is also not a good lesson. But that's just me.
Really. So if a classmate asks if she looks fat, you've trained them to tell her the truth?
If so, you've done them no favors.
Unless you've also taught them to be ninja warriors.

Things are rarely completely black and white.
I wish my parents had taught me to be a ninja warrior.
Okay...
1. everybody lies.
2. her actions could lead to valuable insight and (at least for her) a better understanding of young girls in that situation.
3. if a teen pregnancy ruins an entire family's "good name" then so be it; it's a town full of judgmental idiots, then.
4. i really, really don't see the big deal here.
It really isn't that big a deal, just a question of morals. I do find it interesting that you would say if anyone was injured in gaining that information then too bad though....Like I said Ends justifying the means.....Great.

This experiment doesn't promote a "ends justifying the means" philosophy, I mean how else are you going to get the results of this extensive experiment without you know actually getting pregnant. It's not like there were other options on the table.
Sure it does. The above response to which you quoted proves it. Also, this isn't some college class experiment for a psyc class or something, this was a High School Senior.
Inappropiate at best IMHO.
