Teachers at Al-Madinah Muslim school in Derby claim they have been ordered to wear the hijab | This is DerbyshireWOMEN teachers at Al-Madinah School in Derby claim they are being told to cover their heads and shoulders with a hijab – an Islamic scarf – whether or not they are Muslim.
This is one of several complaints made by staff to their unions at Al-Madinah School, which is currently under investigation by the Education Funding Agency for alleged irregularities over its grants.

Whom in their right mind would send their kids to a school that is named: al-madinah; I mean seriously. You'd expect them to have some arabic influence and why would you want influences from a culture who produces less cultural and scientific output, all the islamic world combined, than Oxford university alone. You have to be at least a cretin.

and that girls are told to sit at the back of classes.
The dress code is a minor issue, the bit that ****s me is this:
Seriously, why the **** are people focusing on the dress code when the place is enforcing misogyny?
the dress code is part of the whole misogynistic view of the school and of islam and it is a tool used to get away with such acts as to force the girls to sit in the back of the class.

while 44% said Muslims did not share the same values as the rest of the population.
Interestingly enough, this is very similar to the percentage of Muslims who want Britain to be governed by Sharia law.
The UK is debating Muslim issues incessantly, at the moment. ALL things Muslim is under the microscope, only today:
More than a quarter of 18 to 24-year-olds in Britain do not trust Muslims, a BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat poll suggests.
Of the 1,000 young people questioned, 28% said Britain would be better off with fewer Muslims, while 44% said Muslims did not share the same values as the rest of the population.
Some 60% thought the British public had a negative image of Muslims.
And what is most important for me:
Akeela Ahmed, from the Cross-government Working Group on Anti-Muslim Hatred, said: "These findings indicate that we need to ensure young people are mixing at local levels and that they're working on projects together so that people can get to know Muslims and vice versa."
BBC - Newsbeat - Quarter of young British people 'do not trust Muslims'

Many commentators are now pointing towards the media, and suggesting the media is at fault over how it's reporting issues to do with Muslims, and are distorting the issue .I feel the issue is more complex, but we are definitely addressing the issue!
Paul
One cannot simultaneously address an issue while pretending it doesn't exist.
Thanks for posting this, I read the article a day or so ago when it first appeared on Newsbeat. What I am in total disagreement is Akeela Ahmed's statement; I know many in the muslim community have moved mountains to integrate and that is not reported but when there are examples like the recent case where a muslim woman refused to remove her niqab to give evidence, or where Birmingham College was forced into a u-turn on policy regarding Niqab's on college grounds (and in classes) then I can totally understand why young people are beginning to harden their view on muslim integration. Worse still - this example of an American style "free-school" which was just begging for the idea to be abused by a faith school.I'm afraid I wasn't surprised to read it was a muslim school that was trying to enforce sexual discrimination and inequality. I don't want us to enforce a ban on clothing in public areas but common sense by the firebrands in the muslim community is much needed. They are not helping the cause of the majority who are integrating and not wearing niqabs in defiance of the greater culture and community.-- Akeela Ahmed, from the Cross-government Working Group on Anti-Muslim Hatred, said: "These findings indicate that we need to ensure young people are mixing at local levels and that they're working on projects together so that people can get to know Muslims and vice versa --
The real question for debate is how long before Ofsted put this "school" into special measures for breaking all sorts of equality laws and worse still - debasing 100 years of female rights in the classroom--
Ofsted inspection of this school imminent if not actually happening this week, alongside investigation by the Education Funding Agency.
Al-Madinah School said:Short term closure
Owing to a health and safety issue, I have taken the decision to close the school to primary and secondary pupils until I am confident that all children are safe on site.
As parents, you will be informed directly, and on the website, when you are able to send your children back to school. I expect this to be in the very near future.
Very handy that a sudden health & safety alert and subsequent closure of primary and secondary classes has happened right now..
Or am I being too suspicious at just how timely the issue is?
LOL - Inspection is happening today and tomorrow - a notice on the school website announces a full Ofsted inspection - right next to an announcement that -

Al-Madinah Derby Muslim free school 'rated inadequate'.
A Muslim free school in Derby is expected to be rated as inadequate in all areas, the BBC understands.
The Al-Madinah school closed on Tuesday after one day of an Ofsted inspection over "health and safety concerns".
Sources said this was due to incomplete records of child protection checks being done on all staff. The school said it will reopen on Monday.
While the Ofsted report has not been finalised, preliminary findings have given it the lowest possible rating. Link
Regional Officer for the National Union of Teachers, Nick Raine, said they only had a handful of members in the school but all had complained about various issues at Al-Madinah.
"There were concerns about some of the things going on in the classroom, concerns about the quality of the education the children were getting," he said.
"Our members are very concerned about children as a whole and obviously took this job thinking it was a new and exciting school.
"We did say, being a free school, it's a completely different paradigm and we are very worried this is going to be run out across the country.
"It's an experiment on our children's education."
The present school's fate seems to be sealed.
As for Charter or Free Schools, only the govt and Michael Gove seem so keen- especially when the principle can become abused by Faith based schools.
I've definitely switched over to the anti-Faith school argument. Goes hard against my libertarian instinct but the children involved have no say and no choice in their education - the adults make the decisions and as this example shows, adults cannot always be trusted to do best for the children in their charge.

Like you IC, I've been following this story intensely and I now feel Gove has some explaining to do. Unlike yourself I have never been very keen on this kind of school policy.

If Alexa is correct and Scotland has not allowed any muslim faith schools to open, that shows one way of dealing with the problem - Scotland's muslims have tended to be better integrated in society there (that doesn't mean 100% integration).
