Things people may not know: California is often described as high-tax, Texas as low-tax. But that's only true for high income. For the bottom 60%, taxes are lower in CA 1/

things are not so rosy in Texas, but carry on with your misinformation. Some gullibles will fall for ti.

Between property taxes, sales taxes, energy costs, and toll roads, Texas has gotten hella expensive.

now waiting for the "but, but, but" posts.

No buts. However not sure people making 40-60K were leaving California due to tax rates. Rents and housing prices are more important to people in this income group.

Businesses do not move because of people in this income strata. Rather they leave because the CEO and key officers want to avois the high tax rates.

How much does a gallon of regular gas cost in Texas?

Good, good!

Tell all those Californians moving to Texas that they're making a big mistake and should go back!

Tell them that learning about the Texas State Income Tax would be a shock to their systems that all the legal weed in the world would not help them recover from. Then tell them they can't get legal weed in Texas.

I have a house in TX and the property taxes are no joke, and it's the type of tax I hate the most. It treats your property as if it's not really yours. I'd abolish it completely, if I had my way, and have only income tax be a thing (especially since many pay way more for their houses than what they are supposed to, so it's regressive).

You got the love the academic charts. California is losing population because they’ve been bending over the middle class and taking them for a ride for far too long and now the response isn’t to cut the income tax, it’s to get some egg head to massage a dataset to produce a laughable lie that anyone who’s been to both states would know it one.

Oregon has NO state sales tax.
Sounds great till you find out about their monster state WAGE tax.

Texas has no state income tax.
Sounds great till you find out about their property taxes.

Krugman hasn't been correct since the last millennium.

Texas relies heavily on property taxes and sales taxes, which are more regressive than sales taxes, as well illustrated by the charts.

Krugman hasn't been correct since the last millennium.

He is an economist with a Nobel prize. What are your credentials to comment on such things?

If you have an issue here, lets see a specific statement telling us hoe Paul Krugman is wrong AND back it up with someone that actually has credentials that we should pay attention to. I do not believe you are that person.

Your personal opinion of Paul Krugman is moot and not germane to this conversation (iow, we don't care)

the population loss is negligible. You cons love to tout this tired meme.

anyway,, if it has to be explained to you, it's capitalism that drives the housing/rent market, but that doesnt help your agenda, no does it?
That means there's a big demand to LIVE IN CA. There are big jobs with big money.
if you cant afford it, Maybe Oklahoma would be more your speed.

According to this, which I am confident you will accept as a reliable source, the gas price is baaadddd everywhere, and getting worse.

"...Donald Trump: (12:51)
But I said that Biden would embolden America’s enemies. And that’s what he’s done. And that the radical Democrat socialist agenda would set our nation on the road to economic ruin. You look at what’s going on with inflation. Has anyone noticed that your gasoline is now at levels that you never thought you’d see again, six months ago? So we had $1.87 a gallon and we had a thriving industry, energy independent. Nobody thought we’d ever be energy independent. We didn’t need the Middle East. We didn’t need them. And now you have over five dollars in many cases and it’s going, even here, it’s going to be over five very soon. ...
....
Meanwhile, 21% of migrant youth who recently crossed the border reportedly have COVID and they don’t have to do anything. ...And not only with COVID. Biden canceled the Keystone XL pipeline. And as I said, it’s okay for Russia, but no good for us. Remember when he said we will not approve the America first agenda. I said, that’s a killer statement. Isn’t it? But he actually believes that, America first, the greatest I think we’ve ever had, the greatest statement as to what we want to do with our country. And he said, “We are not for America first.” I said, did anybody actually tell him to say that?

Trump: (01:25:03)
He attacked oil and gas workers here in America and caused gas prices to skyrocket, yet now he is begging OPEC for more production to please send energy our way. Please send oil gas to our country. And six months ago we had so much, we didn’t know what the hell to do with it. Unbelievable. He shut a lot of it down, had nothing to do with the environment. It’s called an environmental hoax. He did the exact opposite. I broke OPEC and I broke the cartel. You saw what was happening. We actually had a moment in time where oil prices went down per barrel to minus $37. In other words, if you took a barrel of oil, they gave you $37. I told my people, why didn’t you do that? We would’ve gotten paid to take the oil. That was too much because it was going to destroy our industry. But we did fill up the national oil reserves that were empty for years...

Trump: (01:26:17)
We achieved American energy independence, and we turned America into the number one energy super power in the world. We were bigger than Saudi Arabia by a lot. We were bigger than Russia by a lot. And now we’re going back to them asking them for help. Do you believe this? Biden and the radical Democrats are also pushing a $4.7 trillion spending Bonanza that is nothing but a down payment on the socialist Green New Deal. Build your buildings. Please don’t put windows in your building. That’s one of the ones that we don’t want windows to be in the building. And if they are, they want them to be very small. Take the buildings down in New York and build new buildings with smaller windows...."

I visited California, from San Diego to San Francisco in 2004 and in 2008. There were so many Toyota Priuses parked at the curb in residential areas in 2004, I remember joking about. In 2008, anecdotal observation indicated the noticeable Prius presence of 2004, seemed to double by 2008. In 2008, I made a reservation in advance to rent one. Mileage averaged 45 mpg. Five years later, I took a three year lease on a Prius Plug-in that averaged 56 mpg.

So now, we are 2/3 through 2021 and our federal government is getting back on track to phase out IC engines, after the vote was elegantly "rigged" to send "old smokey" out of the White House and onto the ash heap of history!

It is not neglible for a state like California to have any population loss at all.

for a state of nearly 40,000,000 to lose population when it was previously growing at consistent double didget rates is a giant loss.

40million in the state. Aprox 182,083 loss in 2020. You can thank Covid for that too.

it is negligible. To say it isnt, is ignorant

$2.59/gallon was what we paid. Normal pump price is $2.69/gal, but Murphy rewards points bring that down $0.10/gal (for up to 20 gallons).

Sales tax rates (state and local combined) are slightly higher in CA (8.82%) than in Texas (8.18%). One must also consider gasoline taxes per gallon which are much higher in CA ($0.533) than in Texas ($0.20).

Housing and gasoline costs are higher in CA than they are in Texas, making the overall COL higher in CA than in Texas. A clue (hint?) to that is contained in the OP supplied charts: the income range for the fourth quintile (the only overlap shown) is higher in CA ($62.3K to $112.9K) than in Texas ($56K to $98.2K).

and as mentioned, there is a greater demand for housing in CA than Texas. You know, capitalism. AKA Supply and demand!
Property is worth MORE.

OK, but property taxes are small part of one’s monthly mortgage or rental payments. Median housing costs are more than twice as high in CA as they are in Texas. Trying to argue that lower to middle income folks are better off in CA than in Texas based on tax rates alone is simply ridiculous.

again, what you "libertarians" and conservatives love to tout: SUPPLY AND DEMAND
Those that can not make it here on min. wage will move to a cheaper areas of the country.
taxes are a percentage of your homes' values.

come on, i thought you knew this.

The OP is talking about taxes, specifically in that taxation is less for lower income Americans in California than it is in Texas. Of course it costs more to live in a state with higher real estate value per square foot.

the cost of living is simply a deflection. Im sure they will somehow use "brown people" as an excuse, too.
