Suicide

Should a person be allowed to voluntary end their life?

Simple question.

If someone wishes to end their life voluntarily, should they be allowed to do it?

Currently suicide is outlawed in most countries so that survivors are forced to seek assistance and/or institutionalization. Is this a just law?
 
It raises the question of who exactly one's life belongs to.

I believe that suicide is an honorable way to die when one's life has reached the end of its purpose. If you are suffering from too much pain or disability to fulfill your moral obligations, or your life is an active detriment to your family's well-being, suicide is the most honorable course of action and people brave enough to embrace it should be applauded. If you have committed terrible crimes and your presence brings shame and embarrassment to your family, then suicide may be the only honorable course of action left to you.

That said, most suicides are tragic affairs, borne of depression and alienation. It would be better to treat those root causes of suicide, on the individual and societal levels, before a person is suicidal than to violate his free will and his integrity once he has made the decision to die.

Absolutely, if a person wish to end their life surely it is the choice of the individual.

No, I think not. If you have an incurable disease or have been captured by zionist agents or seized by CIA operatives for whatever-you-call-it torture in foreign countries then the concentration camp in Cuba, well, maybe. But if not, give some thought to, say, the child who finds your body, the driver you throw yourself in front of, the person walking along the pavement upon which your body explodes. No man, or women, is an island. Give some thought to what you inflict on those who love you, all the spiteful guilt-game so many adolescents get into, believing they somehow don't die. They die. I've worked with potential suicides. For my money the whole business stinks!

Is this a joke? Suicide is very selfish, and if the person wants to end his/her life, they should be able to. I agree with your concern about how it would affect other people, but that's life (in that if it negatively impacts someone else, that shouldn't be the basis that a person is forced to stay alive if they don't want to).
 
I never understood this. Whether or not you allow someone to do it, the fact of the matter is that if they really wanted to do it they're going to. You can't punish them for it, as they're dead.

This seems to be a non-issue to me.
 
if one is in unendurable pain, with a terminal illness perhaps
if one is just unhappy with life and wants to end it, they should get psychological help

that being said, why should i give a **** if somebody else wants to off themselves
and aren't some people always going on about the earth being overpopulated

Naive people always suppose that their actions don't have any affect on others. They are wrong. A very high proportion of suicides do it AT someone, and it STINKS, as I say. People pretending to be tough make out they don't care. They are wrong too: try it some time.

One's life is one's own. Of all the things that we should have control over in our lives, how we die is most certainly at the top of the list. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that the state should be involved in whether or not I wish to die.

And besides, who the **** do they plan on punishing with some silly law against suicide? LMFAO
 
Well when it comes to legal issues and laws there is mostly a concern with assisted suicide.

You don't go to jail for trying to kill yourself even if you proved inadequate at the job and you live through the mess. No one brings charges against you.

The issue is more about whether you have the right to have someone aid you in killing yourself and whether or not this type of aid should be legal vs illegal.

I'm torn on hospice patients because they're terminal and I can see wanting to die with some dignity and in some illnesses this is just impossible and you linger on till there is not a shred of dignity left knowing all the while that you are in the throes of death.

But for all non-terminal folks I am completely against making it legal for them to have access to any manner of assisted suicide.

Suicide is selfish but it is their body, not ours.
I am in favour of assisted suicide for that specific reason.

How does the Govt. plan to charge the dead anyway?
 
People can kill themselves if they want, I even think that assisted suicide should be ok. But I do think that on the business side of it, people would have to go through therapy before being allowed to actually go through with it. There's no coming back from death and if you're really at the point where you want to die then so be it. But if you're just having a bout with depression, you probably just need help with that cause if you make it through that stage you're probably going to be happier alive. But in the end, it's a person's life to do with as they see fit so long as they don't infringe upon the rights of others in the process. So if you want to off yourself do it, just leave others out of it.

I don't think the legality of the issue comes to most peoples minds so we might as well make it legal painless procedure offered by the Gov't on the condition that they wait for 48 hours and agree to talk to family, a psychologist, etc

The laws are not for those who succeed but for those who don't. If you survive you are taken in by the system and are forced to get treatment. If your suicide attempt endangered the public, then you may be charged with additional crimes.
