STFU It Was a Ride

Somebody said that if they can call themselves astronauts for spending a few minutes in space, he can call himself a gynecologist.

The early astronauts were only along for the ride too. They were all accomplished pilots and complained that they were being treated like the dog and chimp that Russia sent up. They were given small tasks to do to satisfy them, readings to take (that were being recorded anyway), etc.

And Alan Shepard was definitely one of those.

“SPAM in a can!”

The difference is the early astronauts were all accomplished test pilots and had the training and experience to deal with issues that can arise during a flight like this. While I’m sure the ride was exciting and definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity, they were just passengers.

Alan Shepard did later land on the moon. I doubt Katy Perry or any of the other passengers could do the same.

Well, my info comes from books so I cant source it, but the earliest were directly compared to dogs and chimps and that's why the guys were insulted and demanded some "control."

When you orbit and come back through the atmosphere with technology that keeps the fire on the outside, then,... you're an astronaut.

Until then, you're a high altitude tourist.

Which is true since the flight parameters were determined by engineers who saw the astronauts as more of a hindrance. The pilots won the argument in the end.

Yes but again, they werent really necessary. They demanded tasks that were redundant or extra.

The difference between then and now, though, is if the capsules in the early 1960s had controls in them, the astronauts could have flown them. Katy Perry and the others could not. They helped generate revenue and publicity for Blue Origin, but that’s pretty much all they accomplished.

The ultimate goal is to have space passengers be nothing more that tourists.

There's no difference in that way. They werent even selected to work any controls. A dog or chimp could have gone up. They did request access to controls.

Yes...pretty sure that's accurate. That's revenue. No different from other businesses that way.

My favorite part of the ride was Jeff face planting whilst checking over the capsule.

Compares herself to Alan Shepard, Gail, please…..

You just went on a ride in space. You didn't pilot the craft, didn't do a space walk, didn't do any experiments, you just took a ride. I'm sure it was special for you because you are in space most of the time anyway, now you can say you really went. American and Russian scientists utilized animals—in order to test each country's ability to launch a living organism into space and bring it back alive and unharmed. They were just along for the ride also.
This was tourism in space.
