Southern Tradition of Women Hyphenating Last Name

This is two first names, or using the first and middle as one. This has nothing to do with hyphenating maiden and last names.

You are confused.

The only time I see this happening is on Facebook, so old friends from school can see who we were.
True. I'm one of those GRITS who was called by my first and middle name. It kinda became one word. I have always used my maiden name as my middle name and my husband's name to honor him and our children.
I'm beginning to think VySky doesn't like people outside of his supposed "bell curve".
Is his name a combination of his and his partner's name?

My roots run deep in the South. Yet I have never understood this Southern tradition.

It is common here for women to carry their maiden names as a middle name.

Then their kids, boys even, have to carry the hyphenated name.

Clearly, its a failure to submit to their husbands.

Its also a Hispanic tradition.

In China wives keep their maiden names and do not take their husband's last name. So much for the patriarchy.

When I married my Chinese-American wife, she kept her last name. It wasn't even a discussion. It makes logical sense. You don't have to petition a court or file paperwork and it made the immigration process easier. And worth noting, she's not my property.

OTOH, my daughter has my last name, which is a common English surname. And a Chinese middle name. People sometimes think she's Hispanic due to her light brown skin. I love the look on their faces when she starts speaking Mandarin or Cantonese.

Hillary Rodham Clinton was the first instance of such I can recall, and I lived and worked mostly in the South without ever encountering any hyphenated last name Women.

Olivia Newton-John.

Where did they say the following:

Srsly dude, at least accept responsibility for your own words...
Who said they did?

It's not actually that common. At least, not in most southern states, and apart from Old Money families of considerable prestige... at least, from what I've seen.

Jesus take the f*cking wheel.

Name your kid whatever you want to.
Sometimes you forget that some people’s politics are just evil and anti-human happiness. Luckily some people are happy to remind us of that fact every so often.

We need dictators at home and not just in the oval office?

I think this is another vysky thread asking to please slap me around verbally, again, today.

I don't see why it matters either way.

My wife hyphenated her name. The main reason why is that the hyphenated initials work out to AF, so now she can call herself {name} AF when she is feeling like a badass. That was literally her entire reason for making this decision. I think its hilarious.

Previous owner of my plane had the tail number changed to NxxxJF. The JF is the initials of his first and last name. Thought that was cool.

What does politics have to do with women maintaining their maiden name?

Something apparently, as the topic is posted in United States Politics..
So I think that is a question on you to answer. 😁

My Bologna has a first name,
It's O-S-C-A-R.
My bologna has a second name,
It's M-A-Y-E-R.
Oh I love to eat it everyday,
And if you ask me why say,
Cause' Oscar Mayer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A!!!!

My mother took her maiden name as a middle name and she's from the north.
My Mom hails from North Jay Maine, you don't get much more north on the East coast, she kept her surname as a middle name. It is to recognize the family she came from. It has passed down as a middle name to three more generations. We have a connection to my Moms family.
Mr.
VySky seems to think that committing to marriage should end the connection to the family who raised you. Becoming a vessel for offspring & nothing more. Sad...
Actually many women today are not taking on the husbands surname & not just celebrities.:oops::confused:
