I've been hearing that ("tuna") as a put-down and a punchline to jokes since grade school, since third grade or something (like boys that age would know... do they remember the smell from being born, or what?). I think it's one of those urban legend type things, apparently drilled into boys' heads before they're even old enough to know what a vagina looks like.

Now, if it's bloody, it smells like blood. But that is still a far cry from fish.
Even not washing for days at a time does not cause a vagina to have a strong odor, because the vagina is a self-cleaning organ (well, the inside of it is self-cleaning, anyway; the outside of it can get kind of rank if you don't wash it, I suppose, but so can guys' genitals, so what are they whinging about?)
If there is a strong or fishy smell to a vagina, the owner of that vagina should seek medical help, as this is a symptom of many sexually transmitted diseases and infections, and not a symptom of much else. What I mean is, there are few benign reasons why a vagina would smell like that. Healthy vaginas do not smell like that. If you know someone whose vagina smells like fish, you should insist they go to the doctor, because something is wrong.

And that's about all there is to say on the matter.
Men, if you are perpetuating this myth, you are not only behaving like grade school boys and causing all the women here to believe that you have never in fact smelled an actual vagina and do not really know what one smells like, but you are also potentially doing a grave disservice to your daughters, who will grow up believing vaginas are supposed to stink, and therefore be unable to recognize that a fishy odor is not normal and is a symptom of several serious sexually transmitted diseases, and not seek early treatment.
