Of those who need personal protection, black men top the list by an order of magnitude or more. That's followed by Mexican American men, then black women, then Mexican-American women, then white men, and white women are on the bottom, least likely to suffer attack of all. In fact, white women are the most protected group that the world has ever known.
Uniform Crime Reports: Murder victim rates per 100,000 population per year: Black men 79, White men 2.7, Black women 13, White women 1.1. In both races the overwhelming majority of perpetrators are the same race as the victim.
Yes, white people have privilege. They don't live in neighborhoods where murderous people are so prevalent.
Socioeconomic status explains some of the difference (pdf file) in rates of violence between races, but not all of it.
I think it's more likely that white women aren't "protected" or "privileged" so much as they don't engage in as risky behavior as black women, generally speaking, as well as the neighborhoods they live in. But 94% of murdered women are murdered by men they know, so where they live may not mean much.
In 2013, there were 1,615 women murdered, most by guns. Most were killed by a man they knew. Most were white. But then there are more whites than blacks, so that is to be expected. Black women are more impacted by fatal domestic violence. A little over 1 out of 100,000 black women are murdered, while about 0.95 of 100,000 white women are murdered. So that's not a large disparity.
More than 1,600 Women Murdered by Men in One Year, New Study Finds | Violence Policy CenterNationwide in 2013, out of the 1,615 female homicide victims, 1,086 were white, 453 were black, 36 were Asian or Pacific Islander, 21 were American Indian or Alaskan Native, and in 19 cases the race of the victim was not identified.
The #1 cause of death of pregnant women in America is homicide.
But there is no doubt that serial killers, by far, target women. As do rapists, of course. And robbers. Women generally are targeted, presumably because they give less of a fight or are weaker physically. Older people are targets, too. Criminals like the path of least resistance.
