On the one hand, we picture the president being able to veto unnecessary spending attached to a must pass bill but unrelated to that bill.

On the other hand, we see the presidency increasing in power to the detriment of the balance of powers written into the Constitution.

Remember: We're not talking about Trump having a line item veto, but Trump and/or all future presidents whoever they may turn out to be.

Is the line item veto a good idea? What do you think?

I understand why people want it, but in todays highly polarized political environment it would just get abused.

I think it would be better to impose a “single subject” rule for legislation

Nope, and the SCOTUS should not have that power either. If a law (or package of them) is allowed to be altered (by the POTUS or SCOTUS) then it is no longer the law (or package of them) which was passed (as a bill) by congress.

Let's use an example of a law which increases the cost of X and decreases the cost of Y with a net balance of zero - deletion of either part of that "combination deal" law changes its budget neutral outcome completely.

No, it isn't a good idea for the President to have it.

EVERY President should, IMHO, not just Trump.

Presidents are elected to be the nation's CEOs, whether other people disagree with them or not, and anything a POTUS can do to limit all the PORK jammed into beneficial legislation should be made available to him/her.

I could get behind that. Along with total transparency legislation where everyone's name is attached to what they do. No anonymous filibustering, or tacked on amendments.

You don't want a president. You want a king. Myself and others who love democracy will take a pass on your vision.
