... Calling for the abolition of the death penalty!
Sanders Goes Where Clinton Won't: Calling For The Abolition Of The Death Penalty | ThinkProgress
In a speech on the Senate floor on Thursday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) told his colleagues, “The time is now for the U.S. to end capital punishment.”
“I know we are shocked and disgusted by some of the horrific murders we see in this country that seem to take place every week,” he said. “But it seems to me that at a time of rampant violence and murder, it is important that the state itself, the government here in America, say loud and clearly that we will not be part of that process.”
Sanders, who is currently running for president, acknowledged he is in a “minority position” on the issue — with nearly two-thirds of Americans saying they still support the practice. Yet Sanders also called attention to the move globally to eliminate the death penalty, saying that he would rather follow the example of European democracies than countries like China, Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia that most commonly put their own citizens to death. The U.S. ranks fifth in the world in executions behind those nations, despite the fact that 19 states and the District of Columbia have already abolished the practice.
In fact, the vast majority of death row sentences come from a tiny handful of U.S. counties, and people of color and the poor are disproportionately represented on that list.
“The state, in a democratic, civilized society, should not itself be involved in the murder of other Americans,” Sanders said Thursday, noting that he has “no problem” with sentencing violent criminals to life in prison without parole in lieu of capital punishment. “We should lock them up and throw away the key,” he said.

I'm leaning more and more towards Sanders. The fact that Clinton can't even manage to completely oppose the death penalty speaks volumes about her to me.

From what I have read, that proposal would save some money. It would also do our reputation some good. But I am afraid that it will do nothing for any of our major challenges.

This was never meant to fix a "major challenge". If you'd like to hear solutions to the major challenges we face just listen to any interview he's ever given. The old guy can't shut up about fixing at least a dozen of our major problems.

Which three proposals of his would you see as solutions to our major challenges for the next 50 years?

How exactly does sanders plan to end the death penalty?

I like his healthcare plan, education plan, and a lot of his other plans.

How do you think? Educate people on the costs, the errors.. How do you think changes are made?

Well since the federal government doesn't have authority to ban the death penalty and from the massive support of the death penalty a constitutional amendment looks very unlikely, do you honestly think that abolishing the death penalty is a realistic thing?

I like his healthcare plan, education plan, and a lot of his other plans.

But they are 1968 woolly and disproven dreams. He should get real and make intelligent proposals how to improve learning and the health sector. Calling for government production is cheap populism.

No, they're really not. Universal healthcare is exactly what we need, not the half assed solution we have now. We need to ensure people have access to public college, and if not that, genuine job training programs. Paid maternity leave? That's 1968? Tell that to everyone else..

You are right that ACA is a rather ignorant way to solve a socio-economic problem.

Agreed, nothing worse then a "solution" that hardly fixes anything. We need real healthcare change, a universal single payer system.

Don't get the wrong idea.
Bernie is pro choice and supports women's rights, including the right to control her own body and terminate a fetus.

So, Bernie is pro-life for convicted murderers, traitors, terrorists, etc. but pro-choice when the life at issue is innocent. Understood.

Oh for the love of.. His issue with the death penalty is quite clear:

When it comes to abortion, a fetus is not on par with conscious people. Also, how do you know they're not innocent? I'd rather not take the chance. Do you know the costs? I do not want to turn this into an abortion debate, but why not.. Banning abortion does absolutely nothing apart from harming women.

Why does he keep bringing up topics that have no chance?

The death penalty is a state issue and he is running to head the Federal Government.

Doesn't he know the difference?
Why should it be a state issue? Why does the federal govt allow it to happen? That's his critique.

The Federal Government has nothing to say about it. Why would you think it does?

The same way he plans to implement all of his other untenable ideas. Magic fairy dust.

I'm pulling your leg and I don't want to side track this into another abortion thread. I was just pointing out the inconsistencies that many have around these issues.

I don't see the inconsistency.

Except Bernie actually has plans. Yes, he probably won't be able to get a lot of what he says done, like every person who runs, but that's not the real goal of him running. It's to inspire more people to explore "taboo" terms and let them recognize how behind we are in many areas. Can't forget his influence on clinton either.
