So I'm going to throw the BS flag.... :2wave:
The gator was dispatched with a single shot, ANY centerfire rifle would have been AS EFFECTIVE.... Though I'd go with 30 cal myself.
Feral hogs I have quite a bit of experience with. I've seen a rambutt neighbor put half a dozen 223's into a boar hog and it still hauled ass- no doubt it did die eventually but if the feral was coming FOR that nimnull I don't think it would have had a happy ending. I'd use the 300 blackout way before 223 for ferals. I use my 308 these days, my days of stalking through the creek bottom with my AK clone are pretty much behind me.
Have a bit of experience with coyotes, rarely is the pack more than 4, and never have they attacked a human. They can bother new born calves (damn dogs are FAR more an issue) but most of the time when a rancher pulls up the coyotes are hauling ass. If the coyote (as 90% of the time it is a lone coyote) hasn't been hunted before around 200-250 yards he stops and turns to see what's going on. That's when you take the shot. Good optics and come-up chart are far more important than the actual weapon platform.
I like my LTR with a discontinued Loopy and the 168 Amax- pretty much my all around bullet. A 170 Lappy FMJ for hogs. The 223 is a good choice for coyotes but is doesn't need the AR platform to be the 'ideal' firearm....
I know the 'Spin the Truth About Firearms' loves to pretend things, but practical application says otherwise...
