The state can exert those consequences whether or not the individual agrees to it. That's how states work.

I'll give you a real-life example. When I was a teenager, I regularly broke the law by possessing, purchasing and using marijuana. A whole lot of marijuana.

Smoking marijuana was not immoral to me, but was unethical at the time. When I was arrested when I was 19 for a few grams in my pocket, I suffered the consequences of my ethical violation.

No state income tax already. No property tax would mean even less revenue. That leaves state consumption taxes. The cost of daily life in FL is about to go up that much more -- as if their cratering property insurance market wasn't enough to deal with.

Simply put, it was illegal at the time. And the State had the power to impose consequences.

I don't understand the concept and I'm glad we have almost zero people who claim that shit in the UK.

I pay 10.2% sales tax here. When I was a kid it was 4%. Sales tax shouldn't go up with inflation. Crazy!

Not even sure I'd agree that they're ethics per se.

For civilization to function, it requires the advent, development, and maintenance of complex systems. The law is a system. It is a system that is designed for the purpose of achieving a degree of social harmony, which is not to be confused with social agreement or consensus, but simply a way for people to mostly behave in ways that are predictable, so that the society as a whole is stable.

I don't disagree with anything that you've said - but I think that's what ethics are.

Ethics are not determined by popular vote - it's the social contract itself.

The curse of being one of the last great largely uninhabited, 'uncivilized' land masses. European settlers came over sometime between the Renaissance and the Enlightenment and grabbed North America by the *****. We've been feeling pretty entitled since.

Finally. There's the problem. The idea that anyone is bound by some ridiculous "contract" the terms of which no one would actually agree to.

That was my first thought as well, a big enough sales tax to make up for the loss of revenue.
