Real Estate Gov. Ron DeSantis Backs Proposal To Eliminate Property Taxes in Florida

A Desantis move to kill off public schools in Florida.

Would bet he is financially beholding to the private and charter school lobbyists in Florida.

Removing property taxes in Florida? A new analysis calls that 'a risky proposition'

Property taxes make up about 73% of school district revenue, according the report. And property taxes make up about 18% of county revenue and 17% of municipal revenue, helping communities address some of their most critical needs, including fire and police services.

This whole story is one of the more bonkers things I've ever read.

Don't forget about the bears.

How I usually put it is "This is how you get bears, LANA!", with the last bit only making sense if you watched the crude cartoon Archer!.

That town is a wonderful example of Big-L Libertarianism being anarchy. Unsurprisingly, when you abolish paying for social services, you don't have them. One volunteer cop and his crappy car. Roads breaking. Traffic lights breaking. Trash everywhere. I don't remember what the articles said about sewage.

And.... bears. Because apparently bears do not respect one's human "right" to do whatever one wants.

_______________
PSA: getting rid of civil services and security is a problem, who'd a'thunk it?

I'm not sure. I don't think we are morally obligated to obey the state. Do you agree or disagree?

You are living in and reaping the benefits of a government. There are "Government" free zones in the world. I put that in quotes because government is inevitable: in a group of two if one controls that one is government. If both control, that is government.

Go to places with no official government. You get a warlord, or you get social contract. That's reality. There's no mythical "nobody gonna tell me what to do state". THe moment there is no official structure, someone fills it with physical force. That's reality. That's why we *HAVE* these governments. Nobody will ever respect your "right" to not be told what to do.

So are you gonna wake up? Or do you know all this and just want to make trolling posts?

This is a pretty bold step.

Florida collected $760 billion in property taxes in 2023.

That's a big number to make up.

We would need a 25% or higher sales tax to make anywhere near that number. Of course the very wealthy would make out like bandits. This is just a ploy to boost DeSantis popularity so he can get the legislature to change our Constitution and allow him to govern indefinitely.

Very interesting and very bold.

Interesting link - basically making up the revenue loss by increasing sales tax and more or less putting the state through DOGE type efforts.

We're not morally obligated to "obey the state," but we are, to an extent, ethically obligated to do so.

Oh really? Well I don't think you can have one without the other.

Making the decision to disobey the state ("morally" or otherwise) requires, as a fundamental consideration, an acceptance of the possible consequences of that action.

Like what? You think society will collapse if we all don't do what we're told? The opposite is more likely.

lol, if I told you how much I pay in property taxes, rent to the government, you'd eat those words. But I'm not going to because it's so high it's embarrassing.
So you don't need roads, schools, police or fire protection? Do you live in a cave somewhere?

I like to know my plumber and electrician are qualified.

Well the jokes on you because the license doesn't mean shit. I'm in the construction business and just because you are licensed doesn't mean you know what you're doing.

If you say so.

Yeah but you didn't answer the question. Gee I wonder why.
I wouldn't bother discussing anything with a sovereign citizen any more than I'd engage with a drooling flat-earther.

That's why.

This is becoming pretty standard. The red states are ditching property taxes and income taxes in favor of sales tax which, of course, is the most regressive tax available to them since it hits those at the bottom of the economic scale as a greater percentage of their income. Always screw those at the bottom while reducing taxes on the uber-wealthy is their constant credo.
Yes, the sales tax would increase for all in the state. But if you read the link, you'd see one the advantages to this idea is that it would make it easier for first time homebuyers to afford a home. Their monthly mortgage payment would not include property taxes, which would help a lot in keeping that mortgage payment down.

That sounds great, for people trying to sell their properties to snow birds.

No so great for everyone else, thou. You know - the people who already live there.

H

How do you propose to fund government and public services?
Police
Sanitation
Fire
Parks
Licenses
Roads
Water
Sewer
Hospitals
Equipment
Various other stuff

That's the problem.
They don't have a plan to fund them.

If you aren't morally obligated to obey the state then why follow any laws?

The average annual property tax bill in Florida is $2,386 from what I can find online. That's not bad.
Did it say what average home value that average tax bill was based on?

Hmmmm...Florida already charges no state tax.....sounds to me like desperate DeSantis is sucking up to the orange clown once again.....How the hell is this state, who's losing insurers by the droves, going to stay afloat???

Oh, that's right! NO ONE in the corrupt republican party cares, as long as these greedy politicians like washed up DeSantis get their recognition...
They will not.

They will fail. It will be on the Republicans.
