Because there is so much money on both parties that they cannot get along with each other. If we were in Canada, they work with each other. If America had a Prime Minister then a president, the Republican party would have called a vote of no confidence and removed Trump less than 3 months in office.

What is a joke is that we have one party which has abandoned all pretense of moral or intellectual legitimacy and is only about the naked acquisition of wealth and power. You can't negotiate or compromise with those who 1) Seem not to exist in the same reality and 2) Wouldn't be willing to compromise with you even if they did.

Democrats were going to compromise on immigration legislation. They were even going to agree to money for Trump's wall in order to get help for the DACA kids. Trump appeared to be on board with a bipartisan agreement.

Then some far-right members of the House reminded Trump where his political bread was buttered and the compromise blew up. That was the meeting which became famous for the "****hole countries" comment.




Some bipartisan legislation has actually been passed in Trump's term, such as a law rolling back part of Dodd-Frank and a technical education law. So even though things are bleak they're not as bad as they could be.

Republicans have backed themselves into a corner. They've been playing out a losing hand, but to keep playing they have to cheat every way they can think of.

But that's just part of the story, as mike points out in his book: "How Republicans went crazy, and Democrats got useless" Mike is a Republican, and a historian, and worked for years in the Senate. He knows whereof he speaks.

What you are seeing, with the growing income inequality, is the gradual disenfranchisement of the American people. If you don't want to become slaves, you need to get involved.
