WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama insisted Friday that the U.S. economy is digging itself out of the deepest recession in decades but conceded that "progress has been painfully slow" and many voters in November's elections may blame him.

Facing a rising jobless rate, Obama told a White House news conference: "For all the progress we've made, we're not there yet. And that means the people are frustrated and that means people are angry."
There are a lot of people to blame for this mess, which started with Bill Clinton repealing Glass-Steagal protections, and continued through Bush, and now Obama himself. But Obama is at the helm now, and he is who must be held responsible. If Republicans defeat him in 2012, then the responsibility will pass to the new president. Fact is, blaming the predecessor won't cut it with the American people, who are becoming frustrated. They want results now, but is this fair? After all, when Roosevelt took office, the stock market was a real mess, but it did not make it back to it's former level until the 1950's. In this case, though, I will blame Obama, and I will also blame everybody else, Democratic and Republican alike. They ALL fiddled while Rome burned. Now that our economy is well toasted, I go after Obama, who, while being only one player among many in this drama, is the one who now holds power, and thus represents everything that is wrong with America at the present time. Obama is the head of State, after all, or rather, he is the head of the Titanic.

Article is here.

Yes, it's certainly fair given that the economy was one of the primary reasons he was elected. We should remind ourselves of his campaign promises, too:

"We need earmark reform, and when I'm President, I will go line by line to make sure that we are not spending money unwisely." -- Barack Obama

"I can make a firm pledge, under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes." -- Barack Obama

"I don't take a dime of their [lobbyist] money, and when I am president, they won't find a job in my White House." -- Barack Obama

"I think when you spread the wealth around it's good for everybody." -- Barack Obama

"I will cut taxes - cut taxes - for 95 percent of all working families, because, in an economy like this, the last thing we should do is raise taxes on the middle class." -- Barack Obama

"It's time to fundamentally change the way that we do business in Washington. To help build a new foundation for the 21st century, we need to reform our government so that it is more efficient, more transparent, and more creative. That will demand new thinking and a new sense of responsibility for every dollar that is spent." -- Barack Obama

"What do you think a stimulus is? It's spending - that's the whole point! Seriously." -- Barack Obama

"You will not see any of your taxes increase one single dime." -- Barack Obama

"Why can't I just eat my waffle?" -- Barack Obama

He knew exactly what kind of an image he was cultivating during his campaign (also known as his chief qualification for the office). He also knew what others were cultivating about him and did nothing but encourage it.

It's a little late to be playing the "people have unrealistic expectations" whiner card now.

Of course Obama is to blame for the economy. I don't think he has done anything to help it. It's just dry rhetoric, massive spending, and suffering Americans. It's disgraceful that he pushes all the blame on Bush when he is caught in his own lies and failures as a president.

Come on. We both know that Obama loves this country, and would not purposefully do anything to harm it. If you want to be honest, you can say that Obama doesn't know what the hell he is doing, and I would agree with you.

Opps. forgot my [/kidding] tag.

But seriously folks, I'm not at all sure Barry loves this country, look at where he went to church for 20 years, (yes, I know..... he didn't hear a word said in those 20 years  )
and then look at what he has done to the future of the children of today and tomorrow. (if I have to detail that, you ain't been payin' attention)

So Dan, just what makes you think that Barry loves this country.... be specific and link any claims.

Re: Obama says voters may blame him for economy

obama may love this country but he does so in a way quite different from most americans

what american president has deemed and crammed 1000's and 1000's of unread pages of major social reform, bill after bill, down the throats of screaming americans who are unambiguous in their energetic and united enunciations of NO!

what american president SUES the PEOPLE of one of our 50 formerly united on THREE separate occasions?

which imposes his arrogant, thoughtless presence into a local new york controversy, exploding it into a raging, hurtful, hateful firestorm that, windswept, blows across coast to coast and beyond our borders?

what american pol tells those citizens who happen to disagree with him essentially to SHUT UP?

YouTube - Obama: I don't want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking

who asks NEIGHBORS to rat out NEIGHBORS for expressing FISHY THOUGHTS?

Facts Are Stubborn Things | The White House

who spends the first 6 months of his rocking career running around the world APOLOGIZING for all the rotten stuff we've done, BOWING to pigmies and midgets, DENYING american exceptionalism?

i could go on...

barack hussein may love this country but his PASSION is certainly something new and different

Ok, I spewed my diet coke on that one.

I think Obama is trying to destroy the economy and I was looking at it as something he was succeeding at.
However, the tide will turn in NOV. and he'll be a failure at that.

Re: Obama says voters may blame him for economy

There is a big perception problem about the presidency in this country and many think that an economy is solely the result of presidential action, the fact is the congress controls the purse strings and the president signs a budget. Here's the problem, Obama is an accomplice to the bad economic decisions as he was a part of the budget busting congress of this decade along with many RINO republicans and other earmark grabbing, special interest funding creeps; as well he has signed some very economically damaging legislation as POTUS along with his predecessors so what we have is a two way clusterhump of bad economic policy dating back to the 1970's. It isn't ALL his fault, but he and the congress certainly aren't doing us any favors by adding bad policy on top of bad policy.

Want to impress us.........simple.......don't pass new legislation, streamline those things which are good and provably work; trim the fat in federal programs, give states more sovereignity back; eliminate useless or otherwise onerous legislation; make the tax code simple and less punitive; return to asset backed currency and responsible monetary policy; and then sit back and watch the market booms.

He's a smart man and should do all of the above.
But I don't think a robust economy is something he wants to see. More and more I think his view for America is something most of us never want to see.

And that's a major fear I have as well. Ideally voters will use the new awakening that's come from these last 10 years or so and elect people who will roll back the federal, but I won't celebrate anything before I see it.

Yes. That's exactly what he's doing.

The economy has been more resilient than they hoped, but they've managed to increase unemployment by 50%, increase the deficit by trillions, destroy the nation's health care system, and punish all states who attempt to defend their part of the nation from the illegal invaders. He's also alienated former allies, broken promises, and compromised the technological basis of the US defense industry.

This level of apparent incompetence cannot be accidental.

There's no evidence the Messiah loves the US.

His critical childhood years were spent in Indonesia, he admits he spent his college years deliberately seeking associations with socialists and other anti-American radicals. His policies have all been directed towards dismantling the Constitution, and he himself proclaimed his "global" citizenship. He bows to foreign leaders and he takes no leadership role himself.

Re: Obama says voters may blame him for economy

All of you who are blaming Obama for the economy:

You do know that Obama only passes or vetoes legislation, right? You do know that he can't pass any laws regarding the economy unless Congress writes the bills first, right? You do know that bills have to be debated in the House and Senate, passed in both chambers, goes to a joint committee so the House and Senate can vote on the same bill in both chambers, and it's only until the House and Senate passes the same bill that it go to President Obama to get signed into law, right? You do realize that Congress has more to do with forming economic regulations than the President and his Cabinet does, right?

I'm just trying to make sure. Because I don't know why the President, and not just this one but most Presidents, and those from both parties, gets the blame for the faults of Congress.

I blame Congress for the economic crisis, not the President, and neither the current one nor the previous one.
