WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama insisted Friday that the U.S. economy is digging itself out of the deepest recession in decades but conceded that "progress has been painfully slow" and many voters in November's elections may blame him.
Facing a rising jobless rate, Obama told a White House news conference: "For all the progress we've made, we're not there yet. And that means the people are frustrated and that means people are angry."
There are a lot of people to blame for this mess, which started with Bill Clinton repealing Glass-Steagal protections, and continued through Bush, and now Obama himself. But Obama is at the helm now, and he is who must be held responsible. If Republicans defeat him in 2012, then the responsibility will pass to the new president. Fact is, blaming the predecessor won't cut it with the American people, who are becoming frustrated. They want results now, but is this fair? After all, when Roosevelt took office, the stock market was a real mess, but it did not make it back to it's former level until the 1950's. In this case, though, I will blame Obama, and I will also blame everybody else, Democratic and Republican alike. They ALL fiddled while Rome burned. Now that our economy is well toasted, I go after Obama, who, while being only one player among many in this drama, is the one who now holds power, and thus represents everything that is wrong with America at the present time. Obama is the head of State, after all, or rather, he is the head of the Titanic.
