Navy expected to relieve captain who raised alarm about COVID-19 outbreak on aircraft carrier

Navy expected to relieve captain who raised alarm about COVID-19 outbreak on aircraft carrier.

The Navy is expected to announce it has relieved the captain who sounded the alarm about an outbreak of COVID-19 aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, according to two U.S. officials. Capt. Brett Crozier, who commands the Roosevelt, an aircraft carrier with a crew of nearly 5,000, will be relieved of his command, but keep his rank and remain in the Navy. Crozier raised the alarm earlier this week that sailors on the ship need to be quarantined to stop the spread of the virus. His plea for assistance quickly made headlines.

Did he follow legal whistle-blower procedures?

I think it's going to come down to, did he follow chain of command, and did chain of command give lawful orders?

It is HIGHLY unlikely that the Navy is relieving him merely because he requested assistance for his crew. The way he went about obtaining that assistance might be reason to remove him from command but we have no information whatsoever along those lines...other than a letter that somehow or other made it into the press.

It is unfortunate, but we should not know of this, because if we know of this, our nation's adversaries now know of this and the readiness of one of our most powerful warships. This should not have been leaked to the press.

Oh yeh i'm sure Russian and Chinese intelligence wouldn't have been able to work out why a US aircraft carrier was stationary in Guam and receiving aid....

He should be....he failed to stay operational during adversity...which required a robust infection control program.

On the face of it, it sucks. However, there could have been, might be, security protocols that the Captain violated when the issue became public. It may have been a conscious decision he made to protect his sailors and his ship. In that he was relieved of his command and reassigned I'm guessing he was privately praised but told that he knew the consequences he faced before taking action. If that is the case he is the kind of officer the navy cannot afford to lose.

Does the Royal Navy give the British press regular briefings about the health and wellness of the crews of its various ships and their fighting readiness?

The Royal Navy wouldn't be ignored by our government. I don't believe for a second that this Captain went public before alerting his superiors who then would have altered the Pentagon and the Government. The fact he went public should tell you a lot about the current state of America's leadership.

This in no way is that he can be referred to as a 'whistle blower'. This is something that was his responsibility, not only as a captain in the Navy, but as a responsible human being, to report.

Word just broke- he has been relieved

Was about to post a thread on this. he knew that was a career ender. That said, he would not stand by and see his Sailors die

I applaud his decision

The Navy removed the captain of an aircraft carrier crippled by the coronavirus from his job on Thursday, two days after the officer’s unusually blunt letter warned that if the service did not remove sailors from the vessel more quickly, it would fail them.

The pentagon was all over it so knock off comparing wee wee's.

Guam didn't have a say in the matter?

A bunch of healthy young people don't have much to worry about when it comes to the virus.

The captain was probably the oldest person.

Alert the press, I actually agree with you here... He obviously prioritized the lives of his men over the advancement of his career. Noble and imo, the only correct decision.

At least they allowed him to stay in the Navy and keep his rank.

I didn't say Guam did. But I think the fact a Captain of one of your aircraft carriers went public says a lot.

It's the Captains responsibility to maintain order and do everything he can to prevent the crew from falling into emotional despair.

He ****ed up.

I understand completely Higgins86. The point remains: It should not have been leaked to the press. Whether or not it might already suspected by the enemy, we do not need our highest-ranking military personnel to confirm their suspicions. Because other than cause outrage within the civilian populace and give our nations enemies confirmation for whatever intelligence they do have, are these sailors going to get better treatment and help than what they are already being provided with in the midst of this pandemic? Highly doubtful.
