Navy Awards $5 Billion Contract for Future Carrier USS Gerald R. Ford

So why not just retro fit them?

It would cost a large amount to do this, and that is not the only problem. To retrofit an old carrier to be close to on par with the new Ford would cost probably close at least a couple billion, take a carrier out of service for a couple years +, and you still have an older carrier with a limited lifespan. We currently have 3 carriers in service over 40 years old, and 2 more over 30 years old out of 11 active carriers.

You just can't go and retro fit them in the long run it wouldn't be cost effected to send the Nimitz in for retro fitting the rebuilding of the flight deck alone to bring it up to the Abe Lincoln or GW standers would be around 1 Billion Dollars.

One billion vs 5 billion hmmmmmm

Can't do that anyway, electrical supply is a problem, and going to the new magnetic catapult would use too much.

The question about how Carriers were and are named, here is a quick history lesson.

The first US Carrier was named after Samuel Pierpont Langley CV-1 followed by CV-2 and CV-3 Saratoga and Lexington both named after Revolutionar Battles except for CV-4 Ranger, CV-7 Wasp, CV-8 Hornet all Carriers were named after Battles during WWII for the most part three Essex class Carrier would be after earlier carriers lost Wasp Hornet and Lexington.

In 1945 The FDR became the first Carrier to be named after a US President, after this the first of what would be called 1st generation of Super Carriers like the America,Kitty Hawk were named after Freedom releated names. The present nameing started with the CV-67 JFK and after that all Carriers were either named after a US President or someone that help Naval Air.

Yep along with they wpould need to move the Island out by 4 feet and rebuild all of the shuttles and put in new Blast Doors.

Pardon my bad research I'm posting from my phone.

Aren't? There at least one other ACs coming on line? And still I will take a couple billion over 5.

The right abbreviation is CV. Sorry, I am anal about that and you confused me. No, the Ford will be CVN-78, the H.W. Bush was CVN-77 and was commissioned 10 Jan of this year.

Yes the Bush just came into service it is still doing sea trail and should be joining the Fleet very soon it will be replacing the JFK as one of the East Coast based Carriers it is based at NS Norfolk and it's the last of the Nimitz Class to be build.

Well if we really want to get picky then its CVN not CV since we no longer build Non-Nuke Carriers:mrgreen::2wave:

I agree.
It would do the US so much better to invest this money in sharks with lasers.

Yeah, but if the budgets don't pass, or cuts need to be made, sea-bass will have to do.

We should name them after famous Battles.

The Midway
The Trenton
The Gettysburg

We had a carrier named Midway. Long gone now though and it seems to me if I remember there was a Gettysburg in the amphbious fleet. name sounds familiar though.

Used to be easy to know the ships. Battle ships were named for states cruisers after cities destroyers after famous people subs had fish names now it seems that they just slap any old name on em.

Realize that the catapults on the Nimitz class are powered by steam. Very old technology.

Waaatch it with the old stuff there fella:mrgreen:

What is the new tech for the cats? I did not even realize that the carriers were getting old. I saw that thirty years thing and thought what they got the vinson the lincoln the reagan and then I started thinking how long ago they were built and thought where has all the time went? Sure does not seem like 30 years ago. Some of those carriers were built after I got out!

During the Iran hosatge crisis in late 79 the Nimitz Battle Group relieved us in the Persian Gulf. That was when we had the rescue disaster. She was the cats meow then.

All Carriers now are named after US Presidents or someone who helped Naval Avaition.

The USS Gettysburg is a Guide Missil Crusier that was build in the next town over from me Bath Maine at BIW she is based at NS Mayport.

All Ticonderoga-Class CG are named after Famous Battles.

As for the USS Midway CV-41 she is now a floating Museum tied up at NAS North Island in San Deigo.

I was there for the next crisis in that area, so don't feel bad. It would feel wrong being on deck without stteam billowing around.

[ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_Aircraft_Launch_System]Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) is a system under development by the United States Navy to launch aircraft from carriers using a linear motor drive instead of steam pistons used in conventional aircraft catapults. This technology reduces stress on airframes because they can be accelerated more gradually to takeoff speed than steam-powered catapults. EMALS also uses less fresh water, reducing the need for energy-intensive desalinization.

Is North Island still an active NAS? I was homeported out of there on the Ranger CVA 61. We started out in Alameda and changed home ports with the Enterprise. Is the Enterprise still around?

I know almeda is closed and has been for while.

Ticonderoga. That used to be a carrier. They decomissioned her just as I was coming in the navy. I assume this new class are Aegis? Gas Turbine?

Wiki Says North Island is still active. It's been long enough I had to look to be sure. Never actually been to NI, but spent some time at Mirimar.

FORD?!!!!!! does this mean the ship will sink in dry dock

Awesome tech!!. Thanks for the link. I never got tired of watching flight ops. We were steam so we had a smoke watch. Used sit right up on the stack. Birds eye view of the whole Flight deck.

That was when the Tom Cats were first coming on line in the fleet.

Back in the 70's it was really pretty. Unlike most bases there was no sailor town outside the gate. All middle and upper middle class. The del Cornado hotel was walking distance. Long but still walking distance. Beautiful beaches fresh air. It was really a nice base.

Yes north Island is still very active it's home to West Coast Hawkeyes and Grey Hounds along with three HH-60 Seahawks. They have two Strike Hornet Squadrons that are part of the West Coast Rag that TDY there also.

When were you on the Ranger I was part of the Group that flew off of it when they did the 50 Anv. of Doolittles Msiion.

The Big E is still around her home port is NS Norfolk and she is the Oldest Commision vessel in the US Navy on active duty and when they doi Decon her she will be close to 50 Years of service.

As for the USS Gettysburg nope she isn't an Aegis the Tico Class Guide Crusier are the next step up on the ladder, her power plant is Gas Turbines.

I was on the Ranger from dec73 to jul77. I got out for a few months and reuped for 2 years. I was on the Knox FF1052 out of Yokosuka from april78 to march80.

The Spruance was brand new and the Aegis were still on the drawing board. They were big talk then. Cutting edge tech all that.

Enterprise.......

USS Enterprise, CVN-65, Aircraft Carrier on active duty

We should name them after famous Battles.

The Midway
The Trenton
The Gettysburg

USS Midway, CV-41, aircraft carrier decomissioned in 1992.
USS Trenton, LPD-14, sold to India in 2007
USS Gettysberg, GC-64, is a Guided Missile Cruiser, and is still on active duty.

Of course, we can always try and bring back the naming system of the old Kidd class Destroyers. Nicknamed the "Dead Admiral" class, they were originally built for the Iranian navy, but not delivered after the government changed in 1979.

The ships were then put into service with the US Navy, each named after an Admiral that was killed in battle in WWII.
