sad isn't it??? that so many who cry about this being a free country are unwilling to lift a finger to help keep it that way.
Great, when WWIII starts, where will we be? In a hole...with millions of untrained citizens.No. No mandatory service of any kind. This is supposed to be a free country.
it isn't a free country. not even close.
It once was, but not in my lifetime.
Right now we are so heavily regulated it is ridiculous.
Veterans day is coming up....anybody got any extra patriotism to spare?
Not all regulations are bad, you know. I would bet that nearly ALL, if not ALL regulations are in response to Wall Street types latest version of how to screw the public out of a portion of their hard earned gains. People are easily corrupted in the presence of lots of money...

But we will be "free", right? at least until foreign troops gather us up.

Mandatory public service, in general, would only serve to enlarge the bureaucrazy. We've got excessive "good enough for government work" outside the military already. What kind of fiscal and overhead responsibility is this? This debate should be drawn strictly on big government vs. small government lines. Either you're with the commies or you're with us.
Further, I'd appreciate if you didn't take my money and create a crappy second-rate job of poor service with it. Thanks.

My country is supposed to be the bastion of freedom. Conscription is slavery, and antithetical to the supposed ideals of this country.
Yes, conscription is forced and unrewarded service, or slavery, while national service with incentives and benefits is not slavery.
There should be ample opportunities for such service, based somewhat on the military model, the longer you serve, the more points you earn towards benefits.
I would also suggest a tax credit be one of the benefits, so those who serve are subsidized by those who are too selfish to help pay for their own freedom...

Doubt that would happen, no such explosion occurred during the Viet Nam war, and not only because of all the exemptions given to potential draftees. I think we would be a bit more cautious about our wars, and that would be a good thing all around.hmmm...... looks like majority of polled are FOR mandatory service. Interesting to say the least when you consider Canada's population would likely explode if it actually happened.
"Freedom" isn't always free. Sometimes it comes with a heavy price. Who's going to pay that price? I suppose not you.
That's like comparing apples to oranges. You're talking about careers. Generally speaking, those who have been drafted into US military service, got out once their term of service expired. If they remained as career military afterward, then, my friend, that was by choiceYet nobody is forced to be a police officer. Nobody is forced to be a scientist. Nobody is forced to be a general. You get more people by giving them more benefits.

Yes, absolutely! We would be more careful about our wars if there was mandatory service.

Then by your definition of slavery, the Compulsory School Attendance law is also slavery, right?People never take temporary jobs as janitors? People don't have to get drafted to do that. They do it because the pay justifies the effort.
Besides, the real issue is being avoided. Conscription is slavery, pure and simple.
