2. It was a new virus and little was known about how it spread at the beginning

You can get the opinions of experts from reading their research. I guess you think research articles are gospel truth and do not express opinions. Because you have absolutely no understanding of what scientists do.

Experts do not " express their opinions " in a research paper.
Experts present their findings...and show how they arrived at said findings.
Now in discussion..they may present their hypothesis of what the findings mean etc
But again..that's against the backdrop of their research.
