I wonder how much of the scandal and him being fired contributed to this

Some people just lose the will to live when they can't do the things they love to do anymore. For someone whose life revolved around football and athletics, I can't imagine that this doesn't at least play some role.

He is now dead and I wonder if he had did the right thing he may have lived a few more months or even years.

Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, who is battling lung cancer, is in "serious condition" but continues to "fight," according to his sons. Family spokesman Dan McGinn said earlier in the evening that Joe Paterno was in serious condition after experiencing health complications. "Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications," McGinn said in a statement Saturday to The Associated Press. "His doctors have now characterized his status as serious. "His family will have no comment on the situation and asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time."

I remember my wife asking me a few years back if Joe Paterno was ever going to retire. I said I wasn't sure when he would stop coaching but he'd probably be one of those people that died within a year after he was done with football.

Yeah I just read that he died. It's a shame. PSU turned its back on him in the name of media scrutiny.

For them to throw away almost two-thirds of a century in service makes them a standing joke in the NCAA community. Personally I'm glad that all of their top recruits decommitted, and I wait to see that program struggle for a long time to come.

This is bull****. Public image probably doesn't matter to you, but it matters to schools who are trying to attract recruits and prospective students. They had little choice but to do what they did. And they did not "throw away" two-thirds of a century of service.

And let's not get it twisted - what JoePa did (or failed to do) was wrong. Someone had to take the fall for what went on, and he, appropriately, was one of those someones.

I completely agree. While it is soooo sad that his career will always be footnoted with this "one defining moment," it's deserved. He knew what he was doing...made a conscious choice...and it was the wrong one.

He reported it to his superiors at Penn State and, allegedly, to the State College Police Dept. He even banned Sandusky from setting foot on the main campus. He went through the proper channels and basically did everything one could do in his position. Would you prefer if he just grabbed the nearest microphone and proclaimed to the world that his defensive coordinator sodomizes soaped-up boys in the shower?

If anything, it was everyone over him - from Spangler on down - that needed to be purged from the school.

State College, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Representatives of Penn State's campus police and State College police said Wednesday they have no record of having received any report from a Penn State assistant football coach about his having witnessed an alleged rape of a boy by former coach Jerry Sandusky.

Even with all this crap that went on recently, he was a great coach. One for the history books.

May he RIP.

Yes, Maggie. I'm fully aware that Mike McQueary didn't report it. Paterno said he did though, or so I believe he said it.

Quite frankly, it wouldn't shock me either way since I think everyone wants to just dig it deep and never let it come to the surface again.

Like the baseball record holders who have an asterisk next to their name so will Joe.
Paterno will forever be linked to Sandusky.

One could say that the 10 yr old boy wasn't the only one sodomised by Sandusky as he basically did the same to Paterno's name.

Can we withhold the moral debate? There are other already established threads for that. I'm curious about the "will to live" aspect. In a general sense, JP just being the example at hand.

Well, you see it all the time with old couples where one dies, and the other one goes soon thereafter. It's kinda like that in my opinion. When you're that old, and you have little else to live for, sometimes you just check out.

YES! If you know or even suspect that kids are being raped in the showers? You damn sure should do more. He did not and that is why he is crap. I could care less about him being a great coach because he did not do the right thing and may he not rest in peace. Joe Pa was not someone that others should look up to nor praised. Sure he was a good coach but ignoring and hiding child sexual abuse kinda overrides that in my mind.

In other words: **** You Joe! You Suck and you failed as a humanbeing to do the right thing.

well...i wouldn't go THAT far...it's not like he raped those boys. The guy made a bad decision. How largely that footnote will loom upon the rest of his storied career will of course be a matter of debate, but the guy was a good coach and he helped a lot of boys grow into men.

Yeah. Go and accuse people of felonies without proper evidence. See what that gets you.

He, in fact, did do the right thing. He instructed those who needed to be instructed about what he was told. That's right - told. He did not witness this firsthand, and it turns out that McQueary's testimony to the incident had huge holes of validity missing.

You can sit there on the internet, shouting from your moral pedastal, but you cannot go around slandering people based on hunches or your clearly erratic emotions.

I am not slandering anybody and you best not accuse me of it buster! He messed up and did NOT do the right thing. His legacy is tarnished now because he did not do the right thing.

And now that he is gone? I would not doubt more things will come out about this man. Sure he was a great coach but a crap human in my eyes.
