Wasn't sure how I'd feel about this when I saw the headline. But then read this part:

As an illegal immigrant, Jorge Mariscal waited eight years for a kidney transplant he feared would never come. His persistence paid off Thursday when he underwent the procedure at Loyola University Medical Center. After years of uncertainties, Mariscal said he's excited about his future and grateful for the help he received. But he remains frustrated with a health care system that he worries might leave out an untold number of illegal immigrants in need of lifesaving treatments."Why can't we be treated the same?" he asked while sitting in his hospital room. "Health care should be a human right, not a privilege. At least give us the chance to fight for our lives with dignity."

So it boils down to entitlement. Pay into the system or go to your own damn country and get it done...

Wrong link. But what the hell is a illegal alien doing getting a kidney transplant here in the US? Should have never made the waiting list.

While American citizens scramble to pay med costs a person that should have been
deported will bleed hundreds of thousands from our system. Illegal immigrants should
be only giver ER treatment then returned to the streets or their homelands.
We have a weak pandering system that will eventually be replaced.

People who are here illegally shouldn't be on any waiting lists to get organ transplants in the US,especially when we have lots of Americans already on that list. There should be a legal requirement for these hospitals to verify that these organ recipients are American citizens.

Healthcare is not a right. Sure, it is a humane thing to do, to help other people and be concerned about their health and it is a right in the sense that you shouldn't be left to die on the streets... but healthcare costs money and in certain cases, lives. Transplants, heart, lungs, vital organs that don't regenerate in general, cost lives, and money.

The money-for-life exchange is an exchange that happens quite frequent on the planet. Whether it is hospital bills or medicine. You are entitled to your own money, and you can use that money to get better.

Before we say things like healthcare is not a right, let's first be clear...HEALTH, and health CARE are two different things. One is a responsibility, the other is a service.

Did I miss the part where it says he isn't paying into the system?

Ya, you must have missed the part that said he was illegally in the United States.

If you read the article you'd see that his brother, also an iilegal, needs a kidney too. Not to mention he needs 10K a year he doesn't have in anti-rejection medication. His brother would need the same. The hospital donated the cost of his surgery.

And somewhere in America, a citizen is waiting for a transplant they cannot afford that will never come.

The guy came here when he was 1, so we really can't beat him up over that.
I think it's fine he got the transplant.

With that said, I'm all for open immigration, as long as the welfare system is not immediately available to all incoming individuals.
Not because I'm a hard hearted bastard, but it's just unreasonable, it would bankrupt us in very short order.

So he's had how long to become a citizen??

Personally, I like Sweetbreads.

his illegal status neither aided him nor worked to his detriment
what is the point of this thread?

That is not an answer to my question. many illegals, and or their employees pay into the system.

I think you mean their employers. In those cases they dont have much of a choice. The overwhelming majority of illegal immigrants dont pay into the system. How can they without a social security number? Oh i forgot, they buy #'s belonging to small children and old retirees and use those.

Highly emotional but as with most highly emotional statements lacking in proof and truth. The best you MIGHT can claim is someone who would be a match didn't get that kidney right then but can/will continue on dialysis until a kidney comes available, not to mention many poor citizens can never hope to pay for their transplanted organs.

yes employer, again the statement was not paying into the system... please try and focus

Organ-transplants are not a RIGHT

They're a paid for PRIVILEGE that even many citizens don't ever receive.

To even suggest otherwise is disgusting. This guy's a prick - he thinks there's a kidney factory where they're grown or something? People have to DIE tragically - be a match - and others have to be willing to wait - to make it happen, etc etc.

You don't just pick it off a tree. WTF

Illegal aliens should be denied any treatment except at the ER. Triage, field repair and out. No taking kids
with runny noses. Hospitals are being devastated by the flood of illegals. Only a weak government
tolerates this madness.

Did the article mention that his health insurance was covering anything? Oh...

The statement was not paying into the system... many people pay into the system who lack health insurance. Again the over blown statement not having facts to back much of it up.

just like the whine some 'real' citizen will die now that the kidney went where it did...
