Of course immigration is good. Almost every American I know originates from somewhere out there. It would be a good idea to reduce the amount of social aid. That way nobody could feel, new population was stealing from the immigrants of yesteryear.
Given the tenuous history of the American/Mexican border, it's unlikely that this issue will ever be resolved to certain people's satisfaction. People are just going to have to accept that illegals will always be coming in, unless they are prepared to squander billions on a wall to guard that will just bleed more money than the original problem.
Our immigration system in general needs serious reform. It currently has no rhyme or reason and it's all based on the whims of whatever politician is in power and wants to get the immigrant vote. First of all, migrant workers are doing the jobs that most Americans would never want to do, and for dirt cheap. And regardless if we crack down on immigration or not, companies are going to find a way to make these cheap workers happen because it protects their bottom line. The executives know it, the politicians know it. This is reflected in the puny fines that businesses have been given for being caught. The highest fine to date is $7 million. That's nothing. The immigration issue became a prime focus during the Bush years when the Iraq war was going badly. When Americans took the media bait, the politicians made patch remedies. Propaganda cycle complete. The truth is that politicians right and left don't give a toss about illegals, not really.
Second of all, legal immigration is ridiculous. Our employment strategy for landed professionals is mostly a joke - better than some of our allies, but still a joke. There should not be foreign MDs or PhDs driving taxis or working at fast food places. We have skilled immigrants all around us who can't get re-certified because our government institutions want to preserve all the privilege for Americans while simultaneously extorting foreign labor. All the while, Americans are getting shafted by service costs because the demand for services outstrips the professionals who provide them. Immigrants could solve that, but the fat cats want to keep the supply ceiling low so that we all pay more for increasingly ****ty services.
Our immigration system is all about preserving privilege. That's it.
Legal immigration based upon the country's needs. Not illegal immigration and mass immigration. that is mostly detrimental.

Why can't liberals be honest enough to identify illegal aliens as "illegal aliens"? Why must they refer to them as "immigrants", "undocumented workers", etc?

Immigrants don't bother me. There are many different types of immigrants with different skills, backgrounds, and levels of education. The problem is, especially in my state, there are all kinds of incentives NOT to go through the hassle of trying to get citizenship. No matter what you're already going to get a free education, WIC (food program for mothers and kids), health care, and even grants for college. Yes, each of these an illegal can easily qualify for. If I was living in Mexico, I'd probably want to come here too.
And yes, many do pay taxes because they work on stolen or fake social security numbers. But many times they get this money back and more through the programs I just listed. Also, let me tell you about a scheme that is done every year at tax time. Say an illegal mother with 2 US born children is married to an illegal father, or not married or whatever. She then finds a single man with no kids, a US citizenship, and a full time job that is just low enough so he gets a good return on his taxes. He claims the 2 children as dependents and gets a nice big "refund" that far exceeds the total taxes he paid out of his checks. The money is divided however they feel is fair and they both profit from this easy scheme.
Deporting every immigrant who is taking more then they're putting in will only shrink the problem, not fix it. Government programs encourage failure and hurt the economy,with or without the presence of illegals. Our policies often invite the wrong people in and they just grow the problem. Forget a fence, take away the incentives.
It sounds like your lumping immigrants with illegal aliens.
