ICE raids across L.A. spark backlash; Trump officials vow to continue operations

Under 18 U.S. Code § 111 Assault on a federal agent is a felony punishable by 8 years in prison. Assault with a deadly weapon like a brick or a rock is a felony punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison. In fact just laying your hands on a federal agent is considered assault. It's time to lock these people up.

Well, unless you're a MAGA, in which case you get pardoned way before those 8 years are up. You can even sue the government for putting you in jail. Because the government loves you and you're all beautiful.

Unfortunately, these protesters aren't quite white enough to pull something like that. They'll be rubber bulleted, tear gassed and hit by cop batons and then be hauled in an masse "just in case" as people in the street whether they hit anyone at all or not, just like in 2020.

On the grounds that communist district court judges are issuing injunctions to thwart the will of the American people that voted for MASS DEPORTATIONS
This is a poe isnt it?

You don’t get to choose. Maybe he’s a gang member (which, btw, isn’t illegal in and of itself). Maybe he isn’t.
MS-13 is a designated Foreign Terrorist organization. So is Tren de Aragua.. while SCOTUS has ruled they are entitled to a habeas hearing,
they also ruled use of the act to deport is lawful

He’ll get his day in court. I’ll accept their decision.
of course

Except that's not how the law works.

I think it's fair to say this is the biggest political crisis this country has had since at least the late 1960s and early 1970s. I suspect we're going to race past that post and find analogs further back in our history, and we may eventually run out of analogs. I don't recognize the country I've lived in for 51 years.

Enforcing immigration laws is a bigger crisis than the 'insurection' in 2020?

Well then flush our economy right down the toilet.

Every single industry has immigrants that go in and out of current legal status every single day.

Visas get transferred from one employer to another and paperwork gets screwed up and people move in and out of a status.

Sometimes, they get laid off and can’t get another job within X window of time and fall it of a legal status.

Often when that happens, it’s years before they can get legal status again - or they may never be able to.

You really are not demonstrating ANY actual understanding of what it means to be “illegal” - or how it happens.

And I’m not even touching in asylum seekers.

There are so many different factors involved and the entire foolishness of just deporting g everyone who isn’t in a legal status is sheer ignorance talking.

It would send this country try into such an economic downturn and recession - I truly don’t think people grasp how bad it would be.
And you haven’t a clue that crossing the border is illegal unless you’re seeking asylum or under other legal options available to you.
You cannot choose which laws to follow and which ones to ignore. That’s the way it is in this country. If you don’t like a law get it changed or leave

A lot of law enforcement and courts do just that with American criminals who committed non-violent crimes. Why not reward people who are working hard, have built families here, and who already know how to do the work? Bringing in new workers, even if we could do so immediately, would still disrupt many of those industries because they'd be slower and less experienced.
Fix the laws. And until then apply as evenly as possible the ones on the books

Self-righteousness > food.

Or trump to disband the local government

He can't necessarily do that, but he can have political opposition arrested, and I have no doubt he will. The Courts will be asked to clean it up, but they're not prepared to move at the speed that the MAGA administration is.

You have no right to bitch about the felon ignoring laws if you’re going to ignore our immigration laws

No, Ethel2. This is a debate site and we all have the right to argue that we think stupid laws written by stupid men should not be enforced in the fascistic way they are being enforced currently. If you think that means BirdInHand should emigrate from this country if she does not agree with you, fine. But that makes you indistinguishable from fascists like Stephen Miller and all the other "MAGATS" you decry in my eyes.

Because they hate them. They say they are criminals (echoes of 'they're eating the pets' in there.)

They are driven to dehumanize them.

Its like a sickness.

Misdemeanors and even some lighter felonies are often used to catch bigger fish in our criminal system. Why are you focusing on minnows?

And in response to your other post about Trump being a convicted felon, 34 felonies that impacted millions of people hardly compare to one person who crossed the border and improved our economy. That's not an equal comparison in any light. Even within the justice system, laws are enforced based on severity, risk, and societal impact.

Unfortunately it is a sickness that the xenophobic nationalist far-right has managed to spread effectively across the political spectrum, such that their talking points are repeated by political moderates and people on the center-left.

Why not? The only way we can demand respect for just laws is if we respect unjust laws? With respect, Ethel2, this makes as much sense as debating 170 years ago that the only way we could consistently demand the legal abolition of slavery would be if we believed in upholding the Fugitive Slave Codes until they were repealed.

I'd consider myself in one or two of those categories, but I just want immigration reform that benefits our society and economy while providing better border security. I'm less worried about people in my community being attacked by illegal immigrants than I am them being attacked by angry, violent Americans.
