I'm sure most of you have heard the phrase that the only people who support marijuana legalization are people who smoke it. While that is in fact true, atleast for the most part, I still don't understand the potheads. Sure, they want it to be legal so they can get their fix, and continue using harmful and illegal substances (which wouldn't be illegal if they had their way). Most people are opposed to legalization of illegal drugs, but I just don't get why some people think it's a good idea to make it legal? People who say "it puts innocent people behind bars" are idiots. Innocent people don't use illegal substances. There is no reason for marijuana, or any other illegal drug, to be legalized. You don't want to go to jail? Don't use illegal substances.

The only legitimate use for illegal drugs is for medical purposes, but if you just want to go get stoned and/or feed your addiction, then it's not okay. And people who say that marijuana is not addictive at all are full of ****. People get addicted to marijuana all the time and they suffer from it, just because you got lucky with a joint once or twice, doesn't mean that everyone is immune to become addicted and/or dependent. I really don't understand marijuana legalization people. No intelligent individual supports and/or endorses an illegal activity, yet a select few uneducated persons seem to support the use of marijuana, which is an illegal activity.

I don't know if this is a troll thread or not.

Does the OP realize that cigs have 7000 known harmful carcinogens in them, with something like 2000 being known to cause cancer?

The World Health Organization studied the comparison between alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana in health effects. They concluded that marijuana is safer than either alcohol or tobacco by a wide margin.

Because if alcohol and cigs are legal, pot should be too. Period.

The number of deaths produced by tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana in the US in a typical year is as follows:
Tobacco - about 400,000
Alcohol - about 100,000
Acetimenophen (Tylenol) - about 2,000
Marijuana -- no recorded deaths in history.

Studies even show that due to marijuana's ability to clear the lungs of smog, pollutants, and cigarette smoke, it may actually reduce your risk of emphysema, bronchitis, and lung cancer. Smokers of cannabis have been shown to outlive non-smokers in some areas by up to two years. Medium to heavy tobacco smokers will live seven to ten years longer if they also
smoke marijuana.

Oh yea, and for the record, I've never smoked a cig or joint in my life and I don't even drink.

I don't smoke pot, don't like it, but I fully support its legalization. Also, you do realize that alcohol is more harmful than pot right? Should we outlaw that too?

It sounds very trollish. There was a time not so long ago when people would join and make topics just like this one. But it's all built upon the same illogical arguments. It's essentially saying something is illegal needs to be illegal; but there's no effort put forth to say why it should be illegal in the first place. For drug legalization, I don't think many want to in general make all drugs legal. I would say it's an ideal but given the effects of many of the synthesized drugs; it's maybe not ok to make Meth for instance legal. But marijuana isn't much different than tobacco, which is a product we have as legal in this country. You can't OD on it either. Now there's most likely long term effects depending on quantity and frequency of use. I'm sure it can cause cancer the same as tobacco. However, the only reason why marijuana in particular is illegal is because of the threat hemp had towards the lumber industry. And now, it's more historic. The OP may say something like "most people are opposed to legalization of illegal drugs"; but that's a broad sweeping statement. Surely the vast majority are against things like heroin or meth being legal. But when it specifically comes to marijuana, the resistance just isn't there.

Alcohol is already legal, so that's not a problem. Marijuana is illegal and shall stay that way indefinately.

Alcohol was illegal at some point, people didn't like it. Your argument of illegal should be illegal is nothing more than appeal to authority and completely lacking any evidence, proper argument, and logic.

People who say "it puts innocent people behind bars" are idiots. Innocent people don't use illegal substances. There is no reason for marijuana, or any other illegal drug, to be legalized. It is not true that the only people that support legalizing MJ are those who smoke it. I do not smoke it and I support legalization. There are many, many others like me.

MJ is minimally harmful to the user. There is no physical addiction and very slight psychological addiction. The act of smoking MJ can cause health problems, like cigs, but since the number/amount of joints/MJ smoked is much, much less per day that risk is small compared to cigs. Read more here: Marijuana and the Harm Principle | noharmmeansnofoul.org

The benefits from making it legal include:
  • earn taxes for local, state and federal governments
  • eliminate revenue stream for criminal enterprises - thus shutting them down
  • regulate the production, distribution and sale of quality controlled MJ
  • legalize a substance currently under prohibition which is failing, like alcohol prohibition before it
  • eliminate non-violent offenders from prisons, addressing overcrowding

Colorado is having a huge success in regulating its MJ industry, with licenses, inspections, fines, etc. They earned $21 million last year and $9 million went to close the state budget gap.

People are going to use illegal substances anyway, so it is best to legalize, regulate, tax and control, while at the same time eliminating the criminal enterprises that form when a prohibition is in effect.

Prohibition causes crime and creates criminal enterprise.

Yep, pretty sure it was made illegal and then people realized how stupid the amendment was and repealed it. And pot is on the road to becoming at least decriminalized. I don't understand what problems you have with it, when it is a much safer thing than alcohol.

I don't smoke pot, nor do I smoke tobacco. Nevertheless, they should both be legal. Why?

The drug wars between Federales and smugglers, and between smugglers and smugglers, have created violence and death on our border. Much of that relates to pot smuggling. Still, tons of pot come across the border.

tunnel under the border.

Much of what doesn't come across the border via the violent cartels is grown in national parks and forests.

It just seems to me that we'd be better off if our pot were grown on private land, much the same as cotton and tomatoes, and if we didn't have a drug war on our southern border. The gangs that currently are supported by selling pot would have to find another way of making money. Perhaps we wouldn't have to build quit so many prisons if pot were legal, and if other drugs were to be decriminalized.

If tobacco were to be outlawed, we'd have much the same situation with that particular herb.

Passing a law against something doesn't eliminate it.

People were unhappy with probation. Nobody cares about marijuana becoming legal (except for stoners).

Obviously lots of people care, including States who try to get out from under the Federal Government's thumbs and make their own drug laws which would legalize marijuana. And people who care about proper roles of government and government spending care about the marijuana issue as well considering the vast amount of resources and money we spend on fighting it. Local farmers are also interested in the marijuana issue as legalization would allow them to have marijuana and hemp as profitable crop.

So unless you have anything intelligent to add other than your own assumptions and suppositions, there's not any reason for you to post in this thread anymore.

I oppose legalizing m/j because that would make it more available to kids and I'm against that.

Actually, it would probably make it harder because it would be regulated. A friend of mine from back home just bought freshman in high school pot with no problem at all.

Kids in Jr. High can get pot no problem.

It wouldn't surprise me. I am surprised pot hasn't been legalized already. I mean there is a lot of money to be made from taxing the stuff.

If this were true, then alcohol would be harder for kids to get it than it is. I think the argument that legalizing pot will somehow make it less available is counter intuitive and, just, well wrong.

Yeah for alcohol you need to find some one older than 21 or with a fake. Pot you just need to know some one. It wasn't too long ago I was under 21 and we had easier time finding weed than we did booze.

I'm sure most of you have heard the phrase that the only people who support marijuana legalization are people who smoke it. While that is in fact true, atleast for the most part, I still don't understand the potheads.
Actually that is false. Many people support the legalization of pot because look at going to jail for pot is like going to jail because you threw a wadded up piece of paper on the ground and therefore a serious waste of tax payer dollars.

Sure, they want it to be legal so they can get their fix, and continue using harmful and illegal substances (which wouldn't be illegal if they had their way).

So it wouldn't be illegal substances if it was legal and would be just harmful substances. Which many people argue is no different than alcohol or tobacco.
Most people are opposed to legalization of illegal drugs, but I just don't get why some people think it's a good idea to make it legal?

No tax dollars being frivolously wasted on something as little as growing marijuana or smoking a joint would be a good reason to support legalization.

People who say "it puts innocent people behind bars" are idiots. Innocent people don't use illegal substances.
Technically that's trues. I think what many meant to say it puts people behind bars for little stuff.

There is no reason for marijuana, or any other illegal drug, to be legalized.

That debatable.

You don't want to go to jail? Don't use illegal substances.

You do not want to go to jail then recycle,do not throw a tiny piece of paper on the ground, smoke cigarettes in your back yard or some other little ****.
The only legitimate use for illegal drugs is for medical purposes, but if you just want to go get stoned and/or feed your addiction, then it's not okay.

Should alcohol only be legal for medical purposes and that no one should drink it to get drunk or feed their addiction?

I really don't understand marijuana legalization people.
You probably do understand the marijuana legalization people, but you are feigning ignorance.

No intelligent individual supports and/or endorses an illegal activity, yet a select few uneducated persons seem to support the use of marijuana, which is an illegal activity.

I totally disagree with that notion. For example if a law in blatantly unconstitutional then it is your duty as an American to not obey that law.

If this were true, then alcohol would be harder for kids to get it than it is. I think the argument that legalizing pot will somehow make it less available is counter intuitive and, just, well wrong.

And this of course explains why year after year for the last several decades kids report that it is easier to get pot than alcohol. The latest UM assessment is out, and 80% of HS seniors said it was fairly easy or very easy to get Marijuana

btw: for the OP: it is obvious that you do not understand marijuana legalization people, since you assume that they are almost ubiquitously users of marijuana, this is not true, I do not use the stuff, and am strongly in favor of legalization, and there are many many more like me, as a few others in this very thread have illustrated
