I have a tear in my iliacus muscle

I began stretching one morning (last Thursday) after a long night of celebrating with some friends. It didn't seem to offer the relief i sought, so i jumped on my inversion table with only the stiff leg strapped in and felt some relief, but not in the area i had the stiffness. So i began about 10 minutes of stretching in my hip flexor area, and as i went to get up, i was unable to straighten my leg at the hip. When i say unable, if i was to try, i would feel a rush of super intense pain.

Immediately, i went to the doctor who diagnosed my with a severe strain. He gave me flexeril and norco, then sent me on my way. In the span of the next two days, i was in such pain, i could not sleep, sit, or even walk without looking 90 years old (even on pain medication). I began thinking, is something seriously wrong with my hip? Finally i had enough. I went back to the doc and told him that something is wrong. He did an x-ray and said there was no damage to the hip bone or socket. He than began some manual muscle testing, and various range of motion tests to confirm the problem. He then told me i have a tear in my iliacus muscle, which is also causing my psoas major to spasm due to the close proximity of the two muscles. He also said i could have some minor strains on my adductor muscles.

Instead of giving me stronger pain medication, he gave me a corticosteroid called methylprednisolone. After the first day of taking it (you take 5 the first day, 4 the second, 3 the third.......) i am totally pain free with minor stiffness in the muscle area, but the pain is gone. In about a week, i should be able to resume light activity with my legs! I am so ecstatic, i thought i would share this with the forum in case anyone ever tears, sprains, or ruptures a muscle/ligament.

If this ever happens to you, ask your doctor if you are a candidate for methylprednisolone. Pain pills are garbage as they only get you high enough to forget the pain on a temporary basis.

Not to hijack here but have you ever had to deal with severe tennis elbow? I'm suffering quite a bit. Ice and anti-inflamatories help but man it very much causes me grief.

Not to hijack here but have you ever had to deal with severe tennis elbow? I'm suffering quite a bit. Ice and anti-inflamatories help but man it very much causes me grief.
It's not all bad, i do get 7 paid sick days :)

Never had tennis elbow, but had a bout of tendinitis back in my HS wrestling days, but it has never returned.

I have no idea how effective a corticosteroid would be in ending inflammation in tendons, but maybe this study can provide a better idea.

Are you sure it was your iliacus muscle? I don't think I even have one of those... not that I've ever heard of anyway... :lamo

Are you sure you tore your Iliacus? Did you have an MRI to confirm it? I had an MRI which showed a torn Iliacus and im out of commission for 20 Weeks. Therapy 3 times a week, its brutal. How can I recover from such a rough injury in just a week? lol

I do ibuprofen with gin.

Works like a charm.

To avoid tears (pronounced tares) in the future you should first do jumping jacks to warm up, then go through your stretching exercises before you start to work out.

A tear is from a cold un-stretched muscle being worked too hard.

Youre playing too hard and you are swatting at the tennis ball.

You should push through your shots and keep your wrist firm.

Even so, any type of excessive exercise or sport is going to cause micro tears/tares in the muscles and in the tendons.

When they heal then the muscle and joint are stronger afterwards.

That's where "no pain no gain" comes from.

it might not be tennis elbow. It could also be golf elbow, or even cell phone elbow (seriously, these are all different).

Which one you have depends on exactly where it hurts. My best guess is that you have cell phone elbow. Pulling movements cause it (particularly rows and pulldowns, but also curls), although you might feel it more with pressing movements.

I have a friend who has been having pain for a while and she was operated on last week, they removed some dead tenden material, I have no idea if that was succesful.

If you don't like going to the doc (who is most likely just going to send you to a specialist), you could try an elbow brace, the type that makes it harder to bend your elbow. I've been having elbow paid for quite a while and I find that wearing the brace at night helps, they sell them for less than $10 at Walmart.
