There are bills under consideration every single day Congress is in session. Most of them probably affect everyone in at least a small way.

How often do you contact your elected representatives and make your views known?

When there is something that grabs my attention and I feel the need.

Never. I know they don't give a ****.

I don't write letters to my MP much.
I do visit her surgery or the odd email to ask her which way she is voting in major bills

My elected representatives, generally, never represent my views, there is no point in writing them.

Probably about once a week.

Most of them do read their mail and email, or have it read and a summary made for them about what their constitutents are saying. It can affect their vote, since they do want to get re-elected.

It's a way of making my one little vote go a little further. I also feel more absolved of their stupidity if I told them "NO, do not do that!" and they do it anyway... at least I tried.

Enough to have the standard, "Gee golly, thanks for writing me, I appreciate your concern" generic response letter memorized.

I miss the days when my state legislator lived next door. I'd have responded DAILY to this question.

My Congressman is an anti-Semitic piece of ****, so I have no use for him.
My Senators have too many constituents to care about the opinion of one of them.

I never do. My wife does.
We've both spoken with and met many politicians including from Congress.

Once or twice a month

They aren't MY elected representatives.

I cannot think of a single politician that I would trust to represent me.

If a politician breaks any campaign promise, then they should be arrested and charged with breach of contract at the very least. I would prefer that they be brought up on federal perjury charges.

I also feel that it should be considered federal perjury for any politician that can be shown to have signed off on a bill/law/piece of legislation/etc. without having read and understood it.

I honestly feel that the vast majority of politicians are criminals.

I can't recall a time when I've sat down and composed a letter, but I have signed several petitions.

I'm a member of a couple of groups who send out email notifications when there's something going on relating to said group's interests. I check them out, then sometimes I write congressmen to voice my objection.

When the need arises. More than once a year, but less than every other month I s'pose. Some are better than others with responses.

Tips on getting your Congressman (or someone in his office) to actually read what you're writing:

-Don't do those things where websites say "click here and send a form email to your congressman to do yada yada yada." Those usually get auto deleted.

-Something sent by mail is far more likely to get read than something sent by email, if only because for him to see an email, it has to be printed out by an intern and that's annoying because the computers and printers in the House suck donkey balls.

-Anything handwritten is pretty much guaranteed to be written off as crazytalk.

-Anything over 2 pages without good reason is going in the trash.

-There are databases there keeping track what you wrote about and when, so don't send stupid letters at 15 if you want to work for him at 18.

-Writing an interesting and relevant letter doesn't do much if you send it to the wrong congressman.

-Nor does it do much if you don't include your return address.

-If you type out a legitimate letter about a legitimate concern and do so in a respectful manner, there is a very good chance that your congressman will read the letter in its entirety, tell his staff how to respond, and even add his own hand written comments at the end.
