Well, maybe you should care what they say about you
Well, maybe you should care what they say about you
But she was doing well enough to get into college.Assuming for the sake of discussion this young woman's assertions are correct, we can all rest assured those public educational professionals who failed her as a child will not be held to account. Why? Because they never are. There is no accountability for student outcomes in most of our traditional public school systems, and that is a tragic mistake we (collectively) continue to make.
If I had a student that did incredibly well on every exam I gave, I would think I was a great teacher.![]()
High school graduate suing Connecticut city says she can’t read or write
Aleysha Ortiz claims she asked for educational resources and support for years, but that help never came.www.newsnationnow.com
@BirdinHand
I don’t think it makes it worse. They identified her and put her in sped classes which is what they’re legally supposed to do. If she can prove that her IEP wasn’t followed correctly, she has a case. It sounds like she had a horrible sped teacher for at least part of her time there.
If her statements about her own reading level are correct, then she was almost certainly a diversity selection by the college. But she was doing well enough to get into college.
Oh, so you think she couldn’t read the book ?….or perhaps she wanted to be able to read it at a kindergarten level and wanted to practice. You think she really couldn’t read a child’s book? Talk about jumping to conclusions lol
And obviously, she did very well in the class so the teacher must’ve been doing a good job.

you're right, maybe she's paying for it all herself and her immigrant parents. $20,000 a year isn't much .... of course, still gotta score high enough on ACT's and SAT's and not being able to read/write would impact that I'd think
but schools do teach test taking - its not about reading anymore. did ya'll not know that ?
AI Overview
According to recent data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), around two-thirds of students in the United States are not reading at a proficient level, meaning approximately 66% of children are not proficient readers.
Biennial testing through NAEP consistently shows that two thirds of U.S. children are unable to read with proficiency. An astounding 40 percent are essentially nonreaders.Sep 26, 2023
Why? because kids in the 1st grade and 2nd grades on are not focused on it. Its math and science they're focused on so they can take tests well.
While describing this inequity, Donaldson said “it’s just a host of different factors; it’s hard to disentangle and say that one factor is the leading factor, but there’s a very strong correlation between family income and SAT scores.” Students with learning disabilities are also more likely to benefit from UConn remaining test optional because even with accommodations, their GPA and a portfolio are likely to paint them in a better light than their test scores.
good questionWhat could be worse than passing tests in math and science?(Sarcasm )
My fear is that it is only going to get worse. Years ago, the best and brightest teachers were women who didn’t have many options. Now these same women are going into better paying professions.. We have to pay teachers more …a lot more.
Wtf!we don't need min wage increases, we need teacher pay increases
I would be very anxious to hear why you say that our school system is completely a disastergood question
A) know how to read/write and be a B/C student
B) don't know how to read/write well but can test take and be an A student
which would be better ? this girl is a second
agreed - we don't need min wage increases, we need teacher pay increases but school systems are a complete disaster anyway -another topic completely there
An accountant can make in one week more than a teacher can make in a yearWtf!
This is ridiculous. Teachers are grossly over paid.
I can't speak for the red states but in the northeast, they make ridiculous amounts.
Why would an extraordinarily bright woman go into teaching today when she could make so much more in private industry this is what happens when you exploit women.
Perhaps if you did care what teachers say about you, you might be a better teacher.I care about what teachers I respect say about me. I don't give on flying fig what horrible teachers say about me. Why should I?
And you say you are a teacher? if the test is so easy why did she stand out from the others?Or it's too easy for them and has nothing to do with you.
Oh, that’s great, blaming the teacher. Why doesn’t she blame all the teachers at the college where she is doing so poorly? She said she struggled reading it and had to take it home to practice. There was no jumping to conclusions.
You can't do "very well" in school if you are illiterate. She is suing one of her special education teachers because she was a horrible teacher.
If she was in special ed, that means her disability was identified.Federal law requires that students with disabilities are identified. The responsibility is on the districts to do such.
Unfortunately, parents often do not know their rights and know how to hold districts accountable.
All.
