Honors student sues because she can't read or write

because I'm tied into the education system through family/friends

we pour money into a system more than any other country with a ranked education system far below other countries

As long as ‘social promotion’ is being allowed to keep HS graduation rates up, there’s no reason to expect improvement.

Keep in mind that teachers generally work 187 days/year as opposed to other occupations which must work 240 days/year (28% more than teachers). IMHO, that’s an important factor when comparing the annual salaries of teachers to other occupations.

complete BS

teachers work before hours, after hours, they use their own money for supplies, the summers are used for training classes, night time work for teachers/parent conferences, school board meetings, chauffeuring kids events etc and while there is time off compared to other career's? no, the hours are very comparable

you don't know any teachers do you ?

good question - not sure they would

which is why I agreed teachers are underpaid

Increasing the pay of (all) teachers would likely result in a gradual increase in the quality of new teachers, but most teachers now performing badly would remain on the job (with higher pay) thanks to their union’s protection.

the entire system isn't good - from my experience/knowledge, the administrations are the ones that REALLY f it all up

why? its about money

where does the money come from? gotta have the test scores is one way - and test scores can be addressed by teaching kids to learn how to take tests

this is the system that was created and forged, if people don't like it, lobby for tearing it down and building something better

this student? very limited English speaking attends a USA school and coasts through by using app's on her phone, she's a trouble student from 6th grade on, takes every break she can get to move to the next grade .... that's all on her and her parents

and then complains the system failed her - I hate that, I do. She failed her, her parents failed her.

These are ****in part time jobs. Hello!

what ?

How much do teachers make in New York?

Starting salaries vary across New York’s 700+ school districts. Statewide, the average starting salary for New York teachers in 2022 was $47,981. (1) In early 2024, New York City teacher salaries started at $64,789. (2)

Hmm…

Summer break is a teacher’s chance to:

  • refuel and recharge
  • focus on personal interests
  • reconnect with family and friends
  • take on all those BIG projects
  • travel and explore
This post is about finding ways to do just those things so that at the end of summer break you feel rested, energized, peaceful, and excited about launching a new school year!

But we have to remember that even with so many opportunities and extra time available for a few months during the summer, educators must prioritize taking breaks and focusing on self-care to avoid burnout. When we step away and take time to rest, recharge, and reflect, we will start the next school year feeling refreshed and ready to dive into learning and growing.

ESL kids without a learning disability are also not being taught English phonics in many places in the country. This is a disservice to them.

She moved from Puerto Rico when she was 5.

12 years in school in Connecticut should be more than enough time to learn to speak English.

ESL would or should have ended after 3 years of school

The student has been in Connecticut from age 5, she is now 17. She obviously is intelligent enough to get Honors, and adapt enough to her dyslexia to get good grades.

She likely speaks English quite well

just watched a video of her speaking. She knows English very well, it is her dyslexia that is the issue, not ESL.

She used text to speech devices to assist her in high school.

At most she'll be holding the tax payers of that district accountable, not the teachers and administrators who failed her by passing her.

Same things with cops. State agents screw up, and the taxpayer pays the settlement.

First of all, we don’t put enough money into education. Secondly, it is the red state that have the lowest educational performances.that pull us down..ex; wva, Mississippi, Louisiana, etc.[ no wonder they voted for Trump) however, the United States is repeatedly rated as number one with the top universities.

Rotflmao!

Women are exploited are they?

Unbelievable the things you read on the internet.
Truly unbelievable.
For centuries women have been denied high paying occupations. They were pushed into teaching nursing or secretarial work… none of which are high paying. Now women can compete in the job market and it didn’t just happen in a vacuum..

An accountant can make in one week more than a teacher can make in a year

An accountant can make $50-$60K in a week?

65000 for a 21 year old for a part time job is not insane? Seriously?

Ok

Point?

And I have family and friends that are tied into the medical system. Does that make me an expert in medicine?

A part-time job? Obviously you’re not a teacher and besides all those months that we don’t work, we don’t get paid for thank goodness the union divided our paycheck into 12 months so we didn’t have financial problems in September.
I guess you think an accountant is much more important than an educator because he gets about triple what a teacher gets

My advice, get over it.

Last thing our society needs is a another Gloria Steinem.

They don’t get paid for summers! It is one of the most important jobs and it is at the bottom of the pay scale for professionals.

Would paying the same public school teachers triple what they now earn make them teach any better?
