Both of them have good points and bad points. Lowe's and Home Depot both suck in that they have too many "exclusive" deals with manufacturers/suppliers to make their "lowest price" guarantee claim appear legitimate. Home Depot offers tool rental and sometimes better product selection. Lowe's offers a LAR 5% discount card/account and extremely discounted material delivery fee ($20) with no need to be a "high volume" customer.

I haven't been in a Home Depot in probably 15 years. Maybe more. Their customer service at least used to be completely non-existent. They had me, and they lost me. Maybe they've improved since then but I haven't been back so I wouldn't know.

I like Lowes's and Menard's well enough. Not super thrilled with them, but they're ok.

Ace is hit-and-miss. They either seem to be really awesome, or they really suck. It just depends on the individual store.

I too have had bad experiences in Home Depot but it is more dependent on store location/management. In my area (20 mile radius) there are four Home Depot stores and they vary considerably based on time of visit (avoid weekends and evenings) and how they are managed as far as customer service.

If you don't already know what you're doing - neither one are any good. John Deere, Hustler, Anderson and other quality manufacturers sell a "cheaper" line of products at both big-box do-it-type stores.

Neither offer engineering of laminated beams and if you're impressed by all the little lights and tiles, well, what can I say? You'll get better quality and customer service if you buy from a real lumberyard.

Even Echo has now created a "big box" line. The annoying thing is that manufacturers use "exclusive" deals so that the same SKU (product code) can be bought only at a certain retailer giving the appearance of a lowest price for that exact item.

MTD has been doing this for decades - making the same (except for decals and paint) thing under MTD, Poulan, Bolen and Weed Eater brands. This allows each big box retailer to sell them at whatever they can get for them and still claim to have the lowest price.

I hate that.

Me too. It makes a joke out of the lowest price guarantee when the same product is sold under a different SKU.
It also makes me feel like I'm being lied to. Maybe it's just me, but lying by omission is still lying. When they boast about their low price guarantee they know that they won't have to honor it because it's not exactly the same as their competitor.

LOL - or Hugh M. Woods, Sutherland's Lumber, and a host of other, smaller home-improvement stores? I suspect they were gobbled up by our two and either consolidated or simply run out of business because they couldn't compete on that level.

I really used to like Hugh M. Woods. Sutherlands has good customer service and some good prices but it takes longer and they don't have as much on hand. I just got some knotty alder doors ad Sutherlands. Real nice for a good price. I am thinking about buying a building package from Sutherlands once we sell our camper.

Lowes carries a vast array of items that Home Depot does not.

Home Depot - every time I walk in there they NEVER have what I need. I quit going, tired of the local riff raff. I spend thousands every hear on DIY and other supplies - I go where they can cater to my needs.

I needed them to keep small leather work gloves in stock - I go through 2 pairs a year, they never did follow through.
I needed new blades for my mower. 5/6" wood turks. Nope nope.
40 lbs of cactus soil - big fat no.
Polished pebbles - nope.
ball bearings, line housing, quarter nails on a turn . . . no no no.
I need birch without splits - nope.
I need heartwood without crowning - no.

I mean, Home Depot just sucks. I don't have time for their inferior supplies and stupid employees who don't know a bolt from a lug.

OMG - that's priceless!

I'm that mom, you know - ahs wryte. Got me sawzawl.

your different from the typical mom then, most moms seem to be in a rush for grandkids, while its usually the father playing the blocker.

Yes, but generally grandkids after the kids are married.

Lowes customer service consistently sucks. I call it "Blowes".

lol

exactly.

But there's no way in hell I'm going to 'want to be a grandma' - I've heard time and again from people how offensive, insulting, and hurtful that type of weird behavior is so I refuse to do it. I want my kids to get ahead in life before they decide to have a family - they'll have a more solid future if they do it the right way.

Well I'm sorry, it just is.

I like the layout of Home Depot better than Lowes, but HD customer service isn't great. Most of the time it's difficult to find a clerk in any given dept. It can be frustrating if you're in the middle of a project and you just ran to Home Depot for a small item that you can't find and also can't find a clerk to help you. It's happened to me many times.

Well, I can't say as I'd disagree with that. CS bites at most stores - and for that very reason.

Maybe I just like the orange color scheme better than dark blue. Walking into Lowes is instantly depressing - so much so I can't wait to leave the store.

I don't know, I was in Lowes today and had no problem. Then again, I can't tell you the last time I asked for help in any store, I'm self-sufficient and if I can't find something, I don't bother asking, I go somewhere else. Having things where they can be found, where they make sense, is a basic part of store layout and if I have to hunt around for things, their store layout is illogical and I'd rather not shop there at all. Luckily, it's very rare when I can't find what I want on my own without any help.

I don't ask often, but sometimes will.

What I hate is when I get to the checkout and they ask me if I found everything. If I haven't, their "concern" is irrelevant because, by the time I have gone to the cashier, I've given up and am no longer interested in that item.

I don't go to the checkout, my Lowes has self-checkouts that I go to 99.999% of the time because going to talk to a cashier just has them trying to sell me stuff I don't want and if I did want it, I'd already have it. It's faster and easier to just do it myself. If they got rid of all cashiers, I wouldn't miss them at all.

Don't know why, but I'm not a fan of self-checkouts. Especially if I have something big and bulky. I get ya on the not wanting to interact, though.

Interestingly, that is one of my sore points with Lowes - I hate their self checkout machines. HD's are much easier to use - and rarely fail. After two failed attempts with Lowes' machines I quit using them altogether - saving time going to the cashier.

None of our local Lowe's have self checkouts. Home Depot's are manned by a single person who is more than happy to scan large items with their little gun. That said, if I have a large order on a cart I'll use the regular checkout.

True story about Lowes and HD: I bought tiles for the kitchen floor. HD and Lowes both had similar ones, but the ones at HD, if you looked closely, were a lot thinner and for the same price. Naturally, I went to Lowes.
Since I have just a light duty pickup, I didn't want to overload it, so I asked the folks at Lowes, "How much does a box of tiles weigh? Can I carry a full pallet in my truck?"
"Oh, sure, we put pallets in pickups all the time."
"Fine, but how much do they weigh?"
"We don't know."
"If you don't know how much they weigh, how can you say they won't overload a light duty pickup?"

They didn't like that question. Finally, I looked it up: Fifty pounds per box. A pallet weighed in at about a ton, or twice the rated capacity of a standard half ton pickup.

I took two trips. Not sure how many overloaded trucks they sent off to drive the freeways.
