Harris picks Walz for VP

Vice President Harris has told allies that he she has chosen Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be her running mate, opting for a former high school teacher and Midwestern Democrat to complete a newly assembled presidential ticket following, according to two people familiar with the pick, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a decision that is not yet public.

The choice of Walz, 60, would bring a degree of balance to the ticket that many Democrats have felt would be politically beneficial. Harris, 59, who is Black and Indian American and spent much of her career in deep-blue California, chose from a list of finalists populated by White men, including Walz, who have represented more competitive swaths of the country.

This is not confirmed by the Harris Campaign, but other news sites are picking it up.

Vice President Harris has chosen Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) to be her running mate as she heads toward a November faceoff against Donald Trump, according to two sources familiar.

Walz, 60, emerged as a dark horse contender for the No. 2 slot as chatter over other high-profile names, in particular Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly (D), dominated the early portion of the veepstakes.

But the Minnesota governor saw his profile rise considerably over the last week, especially after a viral cable news interview in which he derided some Republicans as “weird” — a line of attack later adopted by national Democrats....

Compared with some of the other prospects who Harris considered as potential running mates, Walz is less well-known and has faced less scrutiny on the national stage.

A second-term governor and chair of the Democratic Governors Association, Walz does not hail from a traditional battleground state — Minnesota has supported a Republican presidential candidate only once since 1960. But Walz’s credentials as a military veteran and gun owner who previously represented a Republican-leaning, rural part of Minnesota in Congress could help Harris appeal to working-class White voters who have turned away from Democrats and helped fuel Donald Trump’s political rise.

Walz, who is not well-known across the country, catapulted onto the national radar as it became clear that Harris was considering him for the ticket after Biden ended his reelection bid on July 21. He repeatedly criticized Trump and other Republicans as “weird” in cable news appearances, an unusual formulation that attracted attention. Other Democrats followed with the same line of attack, which appeared to strike a nerve in some Republicans, who have felt compelled to push back.

Interesting. I thought it would be Shapiro.

Sorry about the duplicate thread.

...Walz was also seen by many as a safer choice for Harris thanks to his liberal bona fides and the fact that some of the other contenders had come under fire from certain segments of the left. Shapiro received heavy scrutiny recently over his response to pro-Palestinian protests that emerged in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war, while both he and Kelly drew the ire of union leaders.

Adding to Walz’s appeal is the fact that he hails from a Midwestern state that Trump has increasingly set his sights on flipping. Though Biden won Minnesota in 2020 by 7 points, and no Republican has won the presidential race there in more than 50 years, Trump and his running mate JD Vance have stepped up their efforts to campaign in the state.

He will be well known now....and they will have a hard time claiming the ticket wuntz ta steal them gunz

At least I won't have to vote for vouchers to vote against the Republican candidate.

Walz is a solid choice. She didn’t have a bad candidate on her list, to be honest. As a first test, she did very well in a very short time for vetting a VP candidate.

Trump, on the other hand, blew it badly with the fake hillbilly.

.

Yep, the progressives didn't want the Jewish guy from Pennsylvania that could help them beat Trump.
We'll see how it works out but Walz doesn't exactly reach across the aisle and bring in moderates.
It looks like Progressives own the Dems, at least until November.

Yeah, this softens the ticket a bit on guns. He also has been a champion of the working-class which may appeal to some Republicans (those who aren't crazy MAGAs).
Plus, he's always smiling! :)

Election starts today. Media already started. Different conversations! Harris will have to justify why she picked Walz. Some Dems did not like Shapiro.

This is actually the best pick for many reasons but the four best imo:

1) Walz was nearing the end of his 2nd term
2) Shapiro is only a little over year in his first, best for him to stay put and maybe get another term to boot
3) Shapiro can still campaign for Harris in PA and help her win the state, doesn't need to be VP to do that.
4) Walz doesn't have the baggage that might lose MI for her

He will have to justify his choices. Watch the debates. Some Dems did not want Shapiro. Puppet masters!

Walz gives off the nice “I’d have a beer with this guy”/“I would like this guy as my neighbor” vibes and even though he’s quite liberal, his personality should resonate well in the suburbia crowds where there will be pockets of undecided voters across the US
