The reasons for Bush's invisibility among Iowa Republican/conservatives are obvious. He was unpopular when he left office. With the help of Democrats, he piled up more federal debt than any of his predecessors. He vastly expanded the role and reach of government. He launched but did not "win" in the War on Terror. He and the Fed bailed out the big banks and financial firms on Wall Street and Europe.

In the name of fighting recession, Obama has expanded on Bush's own penchant for borrowing money. Bush piled up $5 trillion in two terms, from 2001 to 2009; the current president has amassed that much in half the time.

Even the style and tactics of the 2012 campaign are defined by Bush and his crowd. His campaign was the first to enjoy the benefits of attack ads aired by anonymously-funded independent groups -- and made "swiftboating" synonymous with campaigning.

Now, in Iowa, there is a whole flotilla of outside groups.

So the Bush presidency may be gone, but Bush still reigns, even if we can't see him in Iowa.

Howard Fineman: George W. Bush, Voldemort Of American Politics, Rules From The Shadows

I never knew that Fineman was such a jerk.

It's a huffpo piece, using a child's book series to convey a message to it's readers. Somehow... that is amazingly appropriate.

Agreed, for the most part, RDS. Nothing Fineman wrote is incorrect IMHO. However, I believe he incorrectly give Bush credit. George W. was a shill who was put in place by the powers that be. Someday the nation and the world will know that Cheney was the handler in place representing the powers that be. Cheney was the de facto POTUS. Bush was invisible then as he is invisible now. It never was Bush. He was quite honestly a useful idiot.

Bush is Voldemort?

I think it's more like Cheney is Voldemort. Bush is like Malfoy. Or the guy in the first potter movie that wore voldemort under his turban because voldemort couldn't show his face while Bush is the professor carrying him around on the back of his head doing his bidding.

I see, so Bush was the puppet and Cheney was the puppeteer.

Can Obama be Dobby?

I think Obama's more like professor Snape. At the beginning you are pretty sure where he stands but as the plot plays out, no one knows wtf he's up to.

Seriously politics, get the **** out of my childhood.

So, we think he is good, but an ass, to then think he is evil, to then realize he is the ultimately best hero of the story? By the way, Snape was her best character.

Yeah, but you always get the sense that Snape is a slimy guy.

I think Obama is more of a Quirinus Quirrell.

God I wish but signing NDAA... yeah, that's like killing Dumbledor but I can't see the actual advantage to it.

No. Snape just acted slimey because he hated James for stealing Lily. The fact he did all he did for his love of Lily takes away the sliminess he had earlier in the series.

I'd say that Christine O'Donnell would be Bellatrix Lestrange but as we all know... She's not a witch.

Okay, but either way if we're talking about a guy who seemed okay and then turned out to be a sleaze, Quirrell's a better choice.
