The problems with this issue are that republicans have all but admitted that voter id is a way to give them an edge, have is some places said a student id is not enough, and that the GOP has also banned early or Sunday voting, limited polling places, etc., and done much of this in states freed from scrutiny by the Supreme Court’s decision on the Voting Rights Act. And, of course, there has been no evidence of voter fraud on any significant scale, and no one has explained how this could happen with no one noticing. Maybe a commission to study this could... Yes, you do need the physical card. That is supposed to be how it works. I am an employer. We need to see if the applicant can legally work in the US and you can only do that by seeing the card. The name on the card also has to match the applicant's name. Checks have to be issued in the name on the social security card, not the name that people want to use. Most of the time this has to deal with women getting married or divorced. The name and the number have to match. The way you describe it, an illegal can just steal the SS number of someone else and use it to apply for working.

OK, perhaps you're right. How about something like the new MediCare cards? They don't have a SSN and are issued to everyone on MediCare ... AT ... NO ... COST!

Problem: Elections are held at the state level.

Solution: Republicans AND Democrats come together to fund voter ID's for everyone by passing a bill where States instantiate Voter ID's, WITH FEDERAL FUNDING (1) when Drivers Licenses are renewed (2) Door to door social workers or volunteers from both parties (3) at grocery store kiosks ... however STATES think they can "getter done". State Drivers licenses could have a mark like the "real ID" star., or if they don't drive a simple state ID with the same mark ... FOR FREE. BUT!!!!!
