Again, people like Sheehan have criticized our country's current policies while in this country. It's not an issue of courage, unless you think they should be attacked for voicing their opinions.

Even though I think she is a nut case and don't agree with anything she says I don't have a problem with her criticizing this country here in the U.S...

I wish she would take the time to have a headstone put on her sons grave though.....It has been 2 years and if she care about him so much she would at least take care of that......

You've not satisfactorily explained why she has to be in the US when she criticizes something she doesn't like about the US. Also, why is it your business whether she puts up a headstone for her sun?

I think someone said it but I will repeat it......I thinks it wrong for any American be it Cindy Sheehan or the Dixie Chicks to go to another country and criticize this country be they Conservative or Liberal........There is a time and a place for criticism and that is not it.............It does not take much courage for a Sheehan to criticize the U.S. standing along side a scumbag like Chavez or the Dixie Chicks to do it in front of a bunch of Bush hating lefties in the UK............
So you are only for freedom of speech inside our borders? That's interesting. If Bush was such a great leader he wouldn't be affected by his critics.

Bush is a great leader and he handles criticism very well. I guess you didn't see him at the annual dinner of the White House Correspondents’ Association.

And back when this story about the Dixie Chicks made the headlines (wait, it still is making the headlines, what's up with that?) he answered a reporter saying that he wasn't offended by it, that people have a right to voice their opinions, and that "freedom of speech is a two way street."

Sorry, no link. I saw it on Larry King.

Here's what he said:

"I mean, the Dixie Chicks are free to speak their mind. They can say what they want to say. And just because -- they shouldn't have their feelings hurt just because some people don't want to buy their records when they speak out. You know, freedom is a two-way street."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/01/AR2006060101536.html
As stated by the author of the article I cite above, "That sounds to me like a pretty clear presidential endorsement of a boycott of the Chicks."

It doesn't sound like an endorsement to me. It sounds like he's saying the Dixie Chicks have a right to voice their opinions just as people who don't buy their records have a right to an opinion. He's right, they shouldn't be offended if some people don't buy their records.

It's a free country. He's only endorsing freedom.

That is your opinion. I think he's endorsing the fact that people were boycotting their music. I certainly don't remember the Dixie Chicks complaining or being offended about the fact that people boycotted their music, so why he said that is a little strange (except to make a dig). Look at them now--they are still unwilling to apologize for what they said. I am proud of them for standing their ground.

If he truly endorsed freedom, he would have said that they were free to express themselves and then leave it at that. But instead, he acted like a combative child. It's like my saying to you, "You are free to act like an obnoxious person in supporting Bush's statements." Is that my endorsing your freedom or an indirect slam of you?

I think I'm going back to bed.

That's me endorsing my going back to sleep. So there!

:2wave:

I don't understand how this is even an issue for debate, or why the hell it's such a big deal in the media. Much ado about nothing.

People had a right to boycott their music and they did. People had a right to crush, burn and destroy their cd’s, and they did. People had a right to hit them in the pocketbook by not attending their concerts…….and they did.

So the president does not have the right to freedom of speech? We all can have it but he can’t? He can’t defend himself by making a dig once in a while? Is he is suppose to just sit back and play dead?

I think he was very gracious in what he said in regards to the ditzie chicks. And you are wrong Natalie did apologize for a comment she made. I believe I POSTED THAT COMMENT IN A PREVIOUS POST. The president was not obnoxious at all.

If you want obnoxious look to Howard Dean and Teddy Kennedy……

Yeah, right, you just don't agree with them on issues. Bush is actually annoying, he always seems nervous. It's hard to listen to him speak (and I usually change the channel if I hear him speaking).

Why does the fact that's it easier make any difference? How is it classless?

Well lets just say is the Dixie Chicks came to my branch of the Fleet Reserve Association, the VFW or the American Legion and made those outrageous comments I would give them some credit for that but then they would get run out of town on a rail............

Its easy to criticize in front of people that are nutso like they are and agree with them.......

Does easy necessarily make something bad? Besides, the fact that you'd run them out of town on a rail speaks poorly of you.

First, while I am sure it hit them in the pocketbook, but probably didn't affect them in their standard of living.

Second, where do you infer that I said the president doesn't have the right to freedom of speech? He can endorse people boycotting their music, but that makes him look like an a$$, and I would expect more from our president. I mean, really. He would have looked great if he said, "Hey, they're entitled to their opinion of me." Instead, he took a dig at them, which is actually funny, as it shows the man is insecure and can't take criticism. The poor thing. LOL

First, I usually avoid your posts, so if you said something about Natalie, I didn't read it. Second, her apology was merely that she regretted having insulted the office the president.

Why look to Howard Dean and Teddy Kennedy when I can come here and read this message board? ;)

Are you obsessed with thie guy Ward Churchill? For the life of me I cannot understand your continuing obsession with someone who had 15 minutes of fame more than a year ago. He's not a personality, he's nothing...except apparently to you.

Maybe the two of you need to get a room?

OK tell you what.........You come to my Fleet Reserve Association lodge and put this country down and see what happens..........If you can't see the difference in making outrageous statements in front of people who think as you do and patriotic Americans who love this country and never put it down I don't know what to tell you.....

I truly believe you understand though.....

What would happen?

No one should have the right to silence others, you can disagree and express your disagreement but you should not have the right to silence them or physically harm them.

Most people like to speak their minds at friendlier ventures, that is not really cowardice just human nature. Talking to people who don't here you is useless.

I would, but I'm not famous so no one wants to listen to me. As long as I get to have my own security team, sign me up. I'll be the liberal who had the courage to criticize this country and our president in front of them.

I would criticize America and Bush to foreigners too of course but they also don’t want to listen to me.

There are liberals out there who have the courage to do it.

.....and that's why Bush only speaks in front of groups that are supportive of him, right? It's hardly a "liberal" tactic! :rofl
